Access Project Online from MS Project desktop

Brass Contributor

Hi,

A staff member who was granted Project Professional license now trying to access Project online from Project Professional desktop by adding a Project Web Access account. However, following error is received: "Project was unable to establish a connection with "https://project.microsoft.com/en-US/#/taskgrid?projectid=.....""

On all manuals the URL is something belongs to the company, line https://company.sharepoint.com/

Now the question is, is it possible to access Project Online from Project Professional desktop and if yes, what would be the URL?

Thanks.

Hello @jahongir abdurahmonov ,

Yes it is possible to access Project Online from Project Professional providing your Project Professional meets the requirements: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/projectonline/project-online-client-requirements

The URL to use when creating the account in Project Professional will be like: https://{tenant}.sharepoint.com/sites/{pwasitename}

From your example, it appears you are trying to connect Project Professional to Project for the web which is not Project Online - they are different products. Project Professional will not connect to Project for the web.

I hope this helps

Hello @Paul Mather

Thanks a lot for the reply. Now it makes sense.

However, still I saw this page: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/project-for-the-web-and-project-online-desktop-client-2dd75...

There, it says: "I use the Project Online desktop client. Can I still use it? Does it connect to Project for the web?

Yes, you can still use the Project Online desktop client, and we encourage you to try Project for the web when it meets your needs."

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Hi @jahongir abdurahmonov ,

Project Online desktop client can still be used - just not for Project for the web projects. From that same article - see the text highlighted in red below:

"I use the Project Online desktop client. Can I still use it? Does it connect to Project for the web?

Yes, you can still use the Project Online desktop client, and we encourage you to try Project for the web when it meets your needs. See the Comparing Project for the web and the Project Online desktop client table below.

The Project Online desktop client doesn’t connect to Project for the web – as with all other future features, we will be evaluating this based on user feedback."
