We are excited to share that the new Planner app in Teams- announced last November at Microsoft Ignite - is available today as part of Microsoft Teams Public Preview. This is an opportunity to get early access and explore all the new capabilities, and share your feedback with the product team.

The new Microsoft Planner

As a quick recap from Ignite, the new Planner is a simple, collaborative, and flexible work management solution that’s assisted by AI and integrated into the Microsoft 365 products you know and love. From individual projects to team initiatives, the new Planner app in Teams grows with your needs, and can help you and your team zoom through your tasks and plans and accelerate outcomes.

We’re bringing together the simplicity of To Do, the collaboration of Planner, the power of Project for the web and the intelligence of Microsoft Copilot into a simple, familiar and unified experience, starting in Microsoft Teams.

Available in Preview today

Starting today, the “Tasks by Planner and To Do” app in Microsoft Teams becomes the new Microsoft Planner in Microsoft Teams Public Preview. Here are some of the highlights coming with this preview.

Streamlined and faster. First, you will notice a more streamlined and faster user experience with simplified navigation comprised of three main sections: My Day, My Tasks and My Plans.

All your tasks in one place. The My Tasks view offers you a single place to see and manage your tasks with intuitive filters and search capabilities, including the source of the task, so you can get to what matters most to you fast. This includes tasks from basic plans, premium plans, tasks from Loop, tasks from Teams meeting notes and flagged emails.

All your lists, plans and projects. The new My Plans view brings what was formerly To Do lists, Planner plans and Project projects into a simplified collection of plans, making it much easier to find the most relevant and recent plans.

Pin your favorite plans. We all have a handful of plans that we care about the most. The new Planner enables you to pin your favorite plans to the left navigation pane – simply select the plan and pin!

Get more with premium plans. Create a new plan and get started with one of the multiple templates available. You can create new basic plans for your personal use – that you can later decide to share – as well as starting directly with a premium plan with lots of great features including things like Sprint planning, Goals view, People view, Timeline view with dependencies, Custom fields and more. With a premium plan you can also try the new Copilot in Planner preview to make work more actionable. Copilot can help breaking down tasks into subtasks, identifying work needed to meet project goals and answering basic questions on the overall status of the project.

Here are some ideas on how you can use the new Planner and get started today:

  • Ideate with the team – Create an inspiration board to track the team ideas for the next hackathon.
  • Managing your career goals – Create a plan to track your career goals, core priorities and specific learning and training tasks you want to make progress on.
  • Planning the team sprint – Track progress in your daily scrum with a sprint planning board using the built-in agile tools, and load balance the work as a team using the People view.
  • Managing a product release – Coordinate a product release with dependencies and assess and manage the delivery timeline.

How to Access

How can I access Public Preview of the new Planner?

Preview allows you to get early access and explore upcoming features in the new Planner. If your admin has enabled "Targeted release" in the M365 admin portal or public preview in Microsoft Teams admin center, and your Microsoft 365 subscription includes Planner, you’re ready to check out the new Planner.

For those interested in trying out premium features in the new Planner app, including Copilot in Planner preview, you can begin your free trial or request a premium license by clicking the diamond icon within the Planner app itself. For existing Project for the web users with a Project license, you’re already equipped with access to the new Planner’s premium capabilities corresponding to the license you have.

As an Admin, how can I enable users in my organization to try the new Planner in Public Preview?

To try the new Planner, your organization must have a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes Planner and have activated "Targeted release" capabilities in the M365 admin portal or activated public preview in Teams admin center. For detailed instructions on how to enable Targeted release, please refer to: Set up the Standard or Targeted release options - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn. For details on how to enable public preview, please refer to Public preview in Microsoft Teams – Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn.

If your organization does not have Project licenses, you can start a free trial for your users here. Once you’ve acquired and assigned licenses, be sure to direct your end users to the new Planner app in Teams.

Share your Feedback

As a preview, we know there are still a few wrinkles to iron out and some capabilities to complete. We need your feedback to help us get there. You can share feedback through the new Planner app in Teams directly. You can also send us your feedback via the Planner Feedback Portal.

Here is how you can share your feedback directly from within the new Planner app:

  • Ability to upgrade a basic plan to a premium plan
  • Ability to move tasks from My Day and My Tasks to a plan
  • Ability to see premium plan tasks in My Tasks (limited availability in preview at this moment)
