Teams Crash - Powerpoint Slides and Word Documents when shared

Copper Contributor

Hi all,

As a business we're facing regular MS Teams crashes when sharing powerpoint slides. We all use MacBook Pro's, and the latest version of Teams (v1.6.00.7354, Office 365).

Things that happen across multiple computers and users:

  1. When shared, call participants are stuck viewing the first slide only. When the host stops sharing the slideshow to try and fix it, Teams freezes for the host and they have to force quite and rejoin.
  2. Video content played inside a slide doesn't play, or the sound is not shared (even when sound is being shared as a setting in Teams).
  3. When certain Word Documents are shared, the second that the host stops sharing them, Teams freezes for the host again and they have to force quite and rejoin.

This is an ongoing problem that has been on/off for around a year. It's become particularly bad recently, to the point that our sales team is considering moving away from Teams permanently as they can't share slide decks without crashes.

Is anyone else having this reoccurring crash? Any suggestions? Bearing in mind that it's happening for 5/6 people on different machines.

Thanks,

Dom

Hi @Dom_Conte ,

Experiencing crashes in Microsoft Teams when sharing PowerPoint slides or Word documents can be frustrating, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue. Here are some potential solutions:

1. Update Microsoft Teams: Make sure you're using the latest version of Microsoft Teams. Updates often include bug fixes and improvements that could address the crashing issue you're encountering.

2. Restart Microsoft Teams: Close the Teams application completely and then reopen it. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches.

3. Clear Teams cache: Clearing the cache can help resolve issues caused by corrupted or outdated files. To clear the Teams cache, follow these steps:
- Close Microsoft Teams.
- Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type `%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams` and press Enter. This will open the Teams app data folder.
- Select all the files and folders within the folder and delete them. Note: Deleting these files won't affect your Teams data or settings.
- Restart Microsoft Teams.

4. Disable Graphics Hardware Acceleration: Graphics hardware acceleration can sometimes cause compatibility issues with PowerPoint or Word documents. You can disable it in Teams by following these steps:
- Click on your profile picture or initials in the top right corner of Teams.
- Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
- In the Settings window, go to the "General" tab.
- Scroll down and toggle off the "Disable GPU hardware acceleration" option.
- Restart Microsoft Teams.

5. Check for conflicting add-ins: Third-party add-ins in Teams can sometimes interfere with sharing PowerPoint slides or Word documents. Disable any add-ins you may have installed and see if the issue persists.

6. Try sharing in a different format: If you're consistently experiencing crashes with specific file formats, try converting the files to alternative formats and then share them. For example, convert a PowerPoint file to PDF or share a Word document as a plain text file.

7. Reinstall Microsoft Teams: If all else fails, uninstall Microsoft Teams from your computer and then reinstall it. This process will ensure that you have a clean installation of the application.

If the issue persists after trying these troubleshooting steps, you may want to reach out to Microsoft support for further assistance. They can provide more specific guidance based on your system configuration and software versions.
