Today, we are announcing the support of Microsoft Teams for Targeted release commercial cloud customers. With this support, users or tenants opted-in to Targeted release will be the first production users to see the latest Microsoft Teams features and help shape the product by providing early feedback.

Note: This update is now 100% rolled out to all the tenants in Targeted release

Delivering a consistent, predictable, and fully supported experience

We heard your feedback to provide single control across Microsoft 365 products for early access to features and a consistent way for change management.

Targeted release provides early access to high quality feature releases for OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Office for the web, Microsoft 365 admin center and some components of Exchange Online. With this update, all the customers in Targeted Release now get early access to Teams feature to prepare for changes. Customers can use the early access period to do compliance & security assessments, ensure internal helpdesk readiness, and validate new or modified features before they roll out to the rest of their organization.

This update also improves Teams feature predictability through announcements on the public Microsoft 365 roadmap and Message center. In addition, customers in Targeted release get full support for any issues found in changes landing as part of Targeted Release.

Choosing the right early access program for Teams users

Targeted release allows admins to manage how their organization receives updates across included Microsoft 365 services and now hybrid (client-services) workloads like Teams.

In the past, we aligned Teams pre-release channels with Office and Windows Insider programs so that Insiders find similar names and expectations for similar channels across Windows, Office, and Teams programs. We furthered this alignment by adding the ‘Follow Office Preview’ update policy setting in 2022 that allows Teams users who are in the Current Channel (Preview) for Microsoft 365 apps to automatically be in the Public Preview channel of Teams.

We will continue to look for more opportunities to further align Teams experiences with the rest of the Microsoft 365 products.

Here is how you can decide on the best early access option for Teams

  • If you want consistent early access experiences across Microsoft 365 services, use Targeted release
  • If you want consistent early access experiences across Microsoft 365 apps, use Current Channel (Preview) and set the Teams Admin Center (or PowerShell) Public Preview policy to “Follow Office Preview”
  • If you want early access only for Teams, use Teams Public Preview
  • If you want in-depth engagement with the Teams product group under NDA (with associated program participation requirements), join Teams Private Preview (Technology Adoption Program). Note: this program is currently at capacity.

Note:

  1. If a user is in Targeted release as well as Teams Public Preview program, then Targeted release will take the precedence which means:
    1. User will not see EA indicator on profile picture for Public Preview.
    2. If the user is in Public Preview with 'Teams update policy -> Allow Public Preview' set to "Enabled", then that user will not have the option to opt in/out of Public Preview from the client (how to setup Public Preview update policy).
  2. If a user is in Targeted Release as well as Teams Private Preview (Beta or TAP), then the user will stay in Private Preview.

Set up Targeted Release option in the M365 admin center

Targeted Release allows admins and change managers to control who gets the features first in their company. Global admins can go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and choose to give a selected set of individuals access to Targeted Release, or they can enroll the entire organization in Targeted Release. Note: for larger organizations Microsoft 365 recommends using select individuals versus entire organizations. Learn more about setting up the release option in the admin center here.

Note:

  1. After a Global admin adds or removes user from Targeted Release, it can take up to one week for changes to reflect for Teams. There are plans to optimize this. More information to come soon.
  2. Since Targeted Release is a single opt-in across Microsoft 365 services, adding or removing users from Targeted Release gives or removes early access to Teams as well as supported workloads like OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Office for the web, Microsoft 365 admin center and Exchange Online.

Checking if user or tenant is a part of Targeted Release

Global admins can login to Microsoft 365 admin center to confirm if their tenant or users are enrolled in Targeted Release as shown in the screenshot below:

Thank you for moving in this direction to give organizations more control with feature rollouts. When can we expect GCC tenants to be given the option to move to Targeted Releases?

Microsoft

Hi @Ken Thomas, Thank you for your interest in Targeted release program for GCC tenants. We are planning on bringing this capability for GCC customers. We will share the timeline as soon as we have more information. Thanks for understanding!

@Shikha_Varshney I'm stuck in the teams public preview client (not 2.1), no longer have EA icon (as expected now), and can't switch back and forth between the normal teams desktop client and the teams developer\preview client  :(  I have the teams update policy set to public preview for myself still, and I'm in the targeted users list for our tenant.  Why did Microsoft not allow us to switch back and forth between the public preview client and the normal\current teams client?

Also, what's the difference between the public preview client and the developer client?  Some have it and some don't

Microsoft

@brownt63130 Thanks for your question. As mentioned in the blog post, Targeted release take precedence over Public Preview program. Since you're a part of both the programs, you are seeing the experience for Targeted release user as expected. Users in Targeted release are configured to always get early access to new product and features. Option to opt in/out is not available for Targeted release users.

For the difference between Public preview and Developer preview -

Public Preview is to get early access to unreleased features only for Teams. You can explore and test new features before it rolls out to rest of your organization. Developer Preview is early access program for app developers.

PS. There is a known issue for Targeted release user that Developer preview is visible under About. This will be fixed soon.

Here are some resources on Public Preview and Developer preview for more information:

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you any other questions. Thank you!

Does the target release also work on the Teams mobile app?

I'm looking forward to it because I didn't know how to switch to the public preview in the mobile app. ( Developer preview toggle button is recognized)

Microsoft

@Deleted Targeted release is not yet supported on mobile. Thanks for your interest. Your feedback helps us prioritize features on the backlog.

@Shikha_Varshney - Hello! Does this mean that I need to take out thos specific users from 'Targeted release' so that they can opt in and out in teams ? Because now we have those users in both.

Thank you.

Microsoft

@demha335 thank you for your question and for being early adopter of Microsoft products.

Yes, if you want users to have the ability to opt in and out of Teams Public preview then you will have to remove those users from Targeted release. Please see, if you remove users from Targeted release then they will also lose early access to other products which are part of Targeted release program like OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Office for the web, Microsoft 365 admin center and some components of Exchange Online.

Curious if there is any specific use case why you would want this user to be able to opt out of early access for Teams only?

Copper Contributor

@Shikha_Varshney Our org is in Target Release, but with this change the individuals previously using Public Preview have lost access to some new Teams features they were testing and the Avatar App now gives a permission denied error.  Are there some things only available in Teams Public Preview not available via Target Release?

Microsoft

@Dave_T1820 Sorry for the experience. Avatars are generally available (GA) now and license enforcement went into effect at the time of GA. You might confirm if you have the right license for this feature. Here is the doc for details Set up avatars for Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

Please let us know if you still experience this issue after updating the license. Thank you!

Regarding Teams, is there any difference in timing or features between the Targeted Release and Public Preview? Will either be deployed first?

Copper Contributor

@Shikha_Varshney, I have confirmed our tenant is configured properly.  We are an Education tenant with A3 or A5 licenses.  Is this only available to E3/E5?

Microsoft

@Deleted thank you for your question. For now, Teams features are deployed to both Targeted release and Public preview at the same time.

Here is how you can decide on the best early access option for Teams:

  • If you want consistent early access experiences across Microsoft 365 services, use Targeted release
  • If you want consistent early access experiences across Microsoft 365 apps, use Current Channel (Preview) and set the Teams Admin Center (or PowerShell) Public Preview policy to “Follow Office Preview”
  • If you want early access only for Teams, use Teams Public Preview
  • If you want in-depth engagement with the Teams product group under NDA (with associated program participation requirements), join Teams Private Preview (Technology Adoption Program). Note: this program is currently at capacity.

Hope this helps.

Microsoft

@Dave_T1820 Thank you for checking the license information. Here is the list of supported licenses for Avatars feature -> Microsoft 365 Enterprise E3, Microsoft 365 Enterprise E5, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, and Microsoft 365 Business Premium License.
