Today we’re excited to announce the arrival of a native Microsoft Teams app optimized for the Mac lineup with Apple silicon.

At Microsoft, we are committed to delivering great product experiences that help our customers work easier and faster on their favorite devices. We heard from our customers who use Mac with Apple silicon that they want Teams to be optimized for their devices. We are rolling out a production grade universal binary version of Teams, which means it will run natively on the entire Mac lineup, including those with Apple silicon. For Mac users, this means a significant boost in performance, ensuring efficient use of device resources and an optimized Teams experience even when using multiple high-resolution monitors during calls or meetings.

Microsoft is committed to innovation and committed to the Mac, so we’re excited to bring this to our Mac users. The generally available (GA) version of the native Teams app on Mac with Apple silicon is being rolled out to customers in increments over the coming weeks. As soon as the rollout is finished, everyone will be automatically upgraded with their most recent update to Teams, so there isn't a need to search for download links and manually install Teams. If you wish to speed this up, you can opt-in for Microsoft Teams Preview Program, which will give you faster updates and early access to new features, including Apple M1, where it's guaranteed for everyone already.

We are excited about the Teams innovations we are delivering for our Mac user community and would love to hear your feedback about your experience using our latest features. If you want to try out new Office features first and make a difference in the products you use every day, please join the Office Insider Program and check out the Mac channels.

Great... however, why does the download still refer to OSX "Teams_osx.pkg"?

Copper Contributor

it would be useful if you also added the download link, the official download link is still Intel.

Copper Contributor

Where is the download link? Public download links still points to an Intel version. Download link within Teams still points to an Intel version...

Still requires rosetta ...

Copper Contributor

Subpar software, popular only because of Microsoft monopoly in some sectors, still requires rosetta, still cal macOS OSX like 7 yers ago... Microsoft as always. Still Teams is now fast and usable, thanks.

It looks like the audio driver is still Intel. That seems less than optimal.

Copper Contributor

w00t.  Mine is running natively:

Check the Team's app properties in Finder and ensure that "open in Rosetta" is not checked:

Hope this helps!

Copper Contributor

@davedavedave What link did you use to download Teams for Apple M1? Thank you.

Copper Contributor

I had downloaded the preview build, but everytime I used it, my video feed would look black and white to others on the call. It looked fine on my little preview screen, but it was black and white to all others.

Has anyone else had that issue?

Copper Contributor

@greencatdude Actually I have same issue, even uninstall and reinstall with the package listed above. Eventually, I just uninstall teams, and reinstall it, there's an option asking for install Audio d

Microsoft

@dvaldivia@cdolan92@Sunlitmechanism thank you for comments. The new build is currently being rolled out, so depending on whether you are in selected group or not, you will get current Intel version download link, or link for new universal binary. Same logic is used inside Teams application when requesting updates, so if you don't get native build via updates, you won't be able to download it from Download page either.

As soon as rollout is finished, everyone should get updated automatically, so there isn't need to hunt for download links and manually install Teams. If you wish to speed this up for yourself, you can opt-in for Microsoft Teams Preview Program https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/public-preview-doc-updates, which will give you faster updates and earlier access to new features. Including Native M1, where it's guaranteed for everyone already.

@greencatdude@leon_guan the driver you are seeing being still Intel is audio driver enabling sharing system audio during screen sharing. We had some challenges with this part, but we sorted them out and now it's in testing phase. New version should be rolling out soon and after that Microsoft Teams will stop requiring Rosetta completely

Copper Contributor

Just installed the latest build from github and it's noticeably faster than the Intel version on Rosetta was. Swapping between chats is close to instant, where as on the old version, it took several seconds to load each page. Only a few minutes into using it but this feels like a big improvement, so far.

Copper Contributor

Unfortunately, there are lots of problems:

- showing status mostly is incorrect, for example I am available at my desk, but showed me as away

- video meetings has problem showing the image, I will attached the images to this post.

Whilst this is a welcome move, Teams is still a giant, monopolist dumpster-fire that wastes energy on a global scale and is widely hated by its users -- including this one (c.f. https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams/teams-is-killing-my-mac-every-day/m-p/2790094)

Copper Contributor

I can see that Teams is on version 1.5.00.21565, after "Pick an account to continue" and selecting my work account the login window disappears and the normal teams window opens with "We're sorry—we've run into an issue." and "Error code - 2:-1012".  I have tried restarting teams, logging out, clearing Microsoft Teams cache, clearing entire Microsoft cache, restarting mac.  Nothing works.  I'm curious that after clearing cache Teams still seems to know which account I need to log in as, although maybe that's a web view or something?

Copper Contributor

This post just to unsubscribe the mails as it seems that it does not store the configuration otherwise

Copper Contributor

I can't even get Teams M1 to launch. It bounces and never fully launches. Who knows why.

Copper Contributor

NDI support seems to have been broken.

Brass Contributor

Teams auto updated to Universal app and when Teams launches I just get a white screen.    Went back to the intel version and it worked fine and then Teams auto updated again and the white screen returned.  Still investigating.

Copper Contributor

Mine (1.5.00.11505) has decided that it will now launch. Because...reasons. Nothing else changed.

MS Teams got auto updated to version 1.00.521551 from Version 1.00.517261 .

Post which I always get white screen. Any solution to this issue ? (Apart from downgrading to older version)

OS - Mac 12.4

System - MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021)

Copper Contributor

Is there any way to get the M1 installer without first having to install Rosetta, install the current Teams, and then download the preview?

I'm on a new M1 machine, and do NOT want to install Rosetta.  I've followed MS' directions about opting in for the Teams Preview program, but it still downloads the Teams_osx.pkg installer file.  I've also tried the links in this tread, and get the same installer.

Also, pet peeve:  Why is "OSX" in the filename!??!  It is 2022, and Apple hasn't called it OS X for SEVEN years!  Is this just laziness?

Copper Contributor

The installers are Universal, so they will not require Rosetta. In any case, the system will require your approval to install Rosetta. It doesn't just happen.

Copper Contributor

As greencatdude has already noted in this thread, Team's Core Audio drivers are still on Intel, so I think you'll be forced into installing Rosetta.

Copper Contributor

Dear team

Could you please share the updated link for teams here since i am not able to enroll myself to beta builds because of corporate policy. i am already on below

You have Microsoft Teams Version 1.5.00.21565. It was last updated on 06/07/22.

Copper Contributor

I was able to repackage the PKG file and remove the install Rosetta prompt by following the guide at How to repackage a macOS .pkg installer for M1 support without Rosetta (codejam.info)

Basically:

1) xar -xf ../Teams.pkg

2) nano Distribution (this is a file inside the package)

3) Replace <options hostArchitectures="x86_64" /> with <options hostArchitectures="arm64,x86_64" />

4) xar --compression none -cf ../Teams-New.pkg .

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Andreas

Microsoft

@anaxma there is a reason for Rosetta being required still. Doing what you did will fail to install the Audio driver, which is the only reason why we still require Rosetta (we have a fix already being rolled out). So if you will then want to share your screen with audio, you won't be able to do that. Just bear this in mind please

Copper Contributor

@Marian_Javorka I tested yesterday audio and video after a fresh MacOS installation and it was working fine. I am not doing a lot of screen sharing with audio, so I guess I will use the workaround until an official final M1 version is out. Yet thanks for pointing that out !

Copper Contributor

Videos do not appear in the display once in call.

Both video feeds of participants and self do not appear in the call window on Mac unless a video feed is pinned.

Present on Apple silicon, tested on M2 Mac running Microsoft Teams .22555, .21565, and even the "stable" build 17261.
This is not due to permissions, pre-call previews work fine, participants can view video feed on their screen.

Copper Contributor

Video feeds do not appear in meeting window unless they are pinned.

Apple silicon, tested on M2 Mac running Microsoft Teams .22555, .21565, and even the stable build 17261.

Video transmission is fine as view on meeting attendees computers.

Copper Contributor

Just wanted to +1 @david205 same issue here with all the same builds running M1 and M1 Pro. Have to pin videos. Previews working fine. This was not an issue in earlier builds though as I had a meeting last week and this was fine. So something changed in recent builds.

Note if you have a meeting with another person on an M1 with these builds their video will also not show unless you pin them too and they would need to do the same on their side. Let’s hope this gets fixed quickly.

Users on Rosetta builds or windows are not impacted they will see the source video without issue.

Copper Contributor
Copper Contributor

The video pinning issue is still broken even in daily builds.

Brass Contributor

@anaxma There are new daily builds that looks to be completely fully arm64 now. For those who want to be Rosetta 2 free, you can try out these builds and check if it solves your problem.

Continuous Deployment = https://staticsint.teams.cdn.office.net/production-osx/1.5.00.23552/Teams_osx.pkg which was grabbed from https://github.com/ItzLevvie/MicrosoftTeams-msinternal/blob/master/defconfig#L8

Exploration = https://staticsint.teams.cdn.office.net/production-osx/1.5.00.23502/Teams_osx.pkg which was grabbed from https://github.com/ItzLevvie/MicrosoftTeams-msinternal/blob/master/defconfig#L17

What's new:

• Core Audio Driver has been updated from 2020.42.00.9 (old) to 2022.31.01.1 (new)

• <hostArchitectures> in the Distribution file has been updated from <hostArchitectures="x86_64"/> (old) to <hostArchitectures="arm64,x86_64"/> (new)

Production and Preview builds both use 2020.42.00.9 (old) and <hostArchitectures="x86_64"/> (old)

Copper Contributor

@Lmntryx  Thanks for the link!

The app downloaded / installed without rosetta. Concerns:
- App exit does not work ... Have to forcefully exit it.
- Picture issue as others mentioned above still stands

Copper Contributor

Continuous and Exploration builds still have picture issue and only works when video is pinned. Anyone from MS confirm there is a bug opened on this?

Copper Contributor

Can anyone explain what is the difference between continuous deployment build, exploration build and preview build w.r.t. teams ? Also, which one is better for daily use and stability ?

With the update I can no longer use my Canon camera as webcam using Canon's Webcam Utility software. My understanding is that it is due to Canon's software being for intel, and while the obvious solution would be for Canon to update that software, I need a solution I have control over until Canon does update its Webcam Utility. Is there a way for me to roll back to the previous version of Teams that did work with the Canon Webcam utility (and then delay the auto update until Canon updates its utility)? The Canon Webcam utility had been working fine until this update, and it still works fine on my Intel based Mac. Teams on my M1 Mac just no longer even sees the Canon Webcam Utility as an option to use.

I had to work around this with Zoom by downloading the installer for Intel based Macs, and now it works there. So far, it still works with Skype.

Copper Contributor

Dump the canon webcam app and try Cascadable webcam.

Copper Contributor

Tsuki351, thanks, Cascadable looks great, but I'd rather not spend $40 when my free app was working just fine until Teams updated. I don't think it is too much to ask Microsoft to be able to roll back to a previous version that worked and stay there until ready to update.

Copper Contributor

Hi Team

Can some one please share the latest daily or exploration builds.

thanks

rahul arora

Copper Contributor

It would be great if Microsoft would publish Teams and Edge in the Mac App Store as that is preferred over direct download or requiring Teams to be open to update. This would be parity to those who have a Windows computer in which it is located in the MICROSOFT STORE.

Copper Contributor

it still has intel audio driver which makes clicking noise on the MacBook speakers

Brass Contributor

A newer build is out in Public Preview: https://github.com/ItzLevvie/MicrosoftTeams-msinternal/blob/master/defconfig#L26

1.5.00.24264 (osx-x64 + osx-arm64) - published on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 9:00 AM with 204 MB: https://statics.teams.cdn.office.net/production-osx/1.5.00.24264/Teams_osx.pkg

Brass Contributor

Oops sorry, I thought 1.5.00.24264 in the Public Preview Channel was Rosetta 2 free because of the build number but no. It looks it will come in a future Public Preview build.

Between the middle of August 2022 and now, Microsoft has been compiling two versions of the Universal binary. There are builds that are Rosetta 2 free and builds that require Rosetta 2 which means not all 23xxx or 24xxx builds are Rosetta 2 free or possibly include an arm64 driver.

You can take a look at hostArchitectures in the Distribution file and see if it contains "arm64" to be Rosetta 2 free.
