On January 26th, we released a new version of OneDrive sync (22.002) on macOS 12.1+ with an updated Files On-Demand experience. Prior to this release, OneDrive used a kernel extension for Files On-Demand which is deprecated as of macOS 12.3. We've been listening to your feedback, and we've made some design changes. We're releasing a new version that addresses the most common themes and makes it easier to achieve the previous experience.
Starting with app version 22.033, we're making the following updates:
Removing conflicting icons for locally available files and enabling apps like Spotlight or Time Machine to index files
We’re rolling out a change in version 22.033, to change the behavior to improve how OneDrive surfaces locally available content. The cloud with a down arrow will not be present on that content, thus, removing confusion on whether content is available offline or requires internet connection to access. For most of you, this fix should be applied within a few hours after receiving the updated version.
With this change, “Always Keep on This Device” will work like it previously did before macOS 12.1. When performing the command, a checkmark is applied to the file, and the “not downloaded” cloud icon will be removed. The change that we are making is to ensure that all content that is marked “Always Keep on This Device” is also fetched into the OneDrive folder.
Apps like Spotlight and Time Machine will be able to index these locally available files without any special configuration.
Important: These changes only apply to you if you are not syncing your OneDrive to an external drive. If you are using an external drive, you will have a different experience detailed below.
Enabling a preference to sync all content locally
We’re also making it easier to keep all content synced locally if desired in version 22.033. Currently this is possible if you know where to look in the Finder, but we’ve made it easier with a new preference in the OneDrive Preferences window.
There are two new buttons in this dialog:
Download all OneDrive files now: This most closely replicates the experience of having Files On-Demand disabled. Clicking this button has the same effect as choosing “Always Keep on This Device” for your OneDrive folder. All files and folders will be marked as always available and will download to your device. All newly synced content will also be represented as always available. See below for how this works if you chose to sync your OneDrive to an external drive.
Download files as you use them: Clicking this button restores the default experience of using Files On-Demand. All newly synced files from the cloud will be online-only until the first time you use them. Any file you have previously marked “Always Keep on This Device” will remain available on this device but if disk space becomes low, the operating system can change these files to be available online-only to save disk space.
Important: You do not need to click either of these buttons. These options are helpful if you intend to customize your OneDrive experience.
Improving the experience when syncing to external drives
If you are syncing your OneDrive to an external drive (other than your home volume), starting in version 22.040, we will help you better identify what files are available locally. External drive support is limited by the File Provider platform. We will continue to partner with Apple on addressing feedback related to the platform in a future version of macOS.
If you are syncing your OneDrive to an external drive, we will not be able to remove conflicting icons. Opening files will bring them into your OneDrive folder on the external drive and onto your home drive and allow you to open them without an internet connection. We will now show a hollow checkmark icon for content that is locally available, similar to what we showed before macOS 12.1. Files with a hollow checkmark can be become online-only if the operating system needs to save disk space.
If you want it always available, then be sure to mark the files as “Always Available on This Device.”
Note: As per our normal release process, the best way to get all these changes early is to join our Insiders program.

I just came across your post. Me, and some thousand others, seem to have these issues with that stupid "user experience" Microsoft implemented. For month now I am waiting for any replies on all these comments about that issue. But that arrogant Microsoft team give a s*. I then moved to iCloud (I am using a MacBook Pro as well) and I am soooo happy now.

I moved from Dropbox a few weeks ago, as I suddenly found that files, which I have always had stored locally on my MacBook Pro's hard-drive, were suddenly and randomly 'cloud-only' and had to be re-downloaded.
Unfortunately, I've been experiencing exactly the same issue with my 160GB of files which are now in OneDrive. I have checked the 'keep on this device' and as of yesterday, all 160GB of files were stored locally. There were no conflicting 'cloud' download icons and all seemed well. This morning, I now see a huge number of cloud download icons, randomly, across my folder structure when I open Finder and look in my OneDrive folder. Looking at my drive capacity, I see that I now have another 60GB freed up, suggesting that local copies have mysteriously vanished and gone to 'on demand'.
I am getting sick of this. OneDrive seemingly switches to files on demand mode without me making any changes or requesting it. Weirdly, you click on the OneDrive icon in the bar at the top, and it says that all my files are sync'd (clearly not the case).
Am I going to have to seek a refund and change my cloud storage provider AGAIN?
My data is too precious to entrust to your service currently, even though I make sure to keep regular backups. It is just unreliable.
Gregleleu Yeah--that was kinda obscure. I wanted to cache my OD files on an external drive, and Apple File Provider wants to cache them in my Library folder on my system drive. I've got a 1TB internal drive on a recent Mac Mini, which can handle a local cache fine. The problem for me is that it only caches some files, and it breaks Spotlight, Time Machine, Carbonite, and a whole bunch of other stuff. On demand files aren't ready for prime time under any operating system.
OD has a hack that lets you cache files on an external drive, but I've found it to be really unreliable, and I can't get files to stay local even when I mark them to be. It also breaks the file status icons that let you know if a file is local or in the cloud. Worst of all, it corrupted files, and I didn't have backups because my local copies were whisked away to the cloud with no warning when OD started using AFP. That was the origin of the whole heated thread several years ago.
I tried Mountain Duck as well, and it seems like a good app, mostly. However, I had the same kinds of issues with large OD downloads either taking forever or not finishing at all, and I had the same issues with StrongSync and other apps I tried. GoodSync is different in that it doesn't even try to use AFP—it just monitors your cloud services and local folders and keeps the most current versions in both places. I currently have about 586GB of data on OD, and I keep about 500GB of that in a local mirror. Files on demand works for most things, and I keep a local copy in case of internet outage or MS skullduggery. It's a kinda geeky solution to the problem, but it lets me sleep at night.
One other advantage to GoodSync is that you can even use it to sync between different cloud services. That requires you to download the files and re-upload them across your Internet connection, but I've got a fairly fast connection and schedule the jobs to run overnight. There are cloud services to do this as well, but GoodSync works for my purposes.

But thanks for your message, it made me think of using cyberduck to connect to OD. It started working great, but then it got throttled after a few thousand files which is completely stupid. I'll see if I can find a workaround.
Gregleleu I finally gave up and let OneDrive store its cache on my system drive, which is what it and MacOS want to do. It generally works fine there. In order to keep local copies and backups of my files, I use GoodSync to sync a local version of my critical OneDrive folders on a large external drive. If I'm really stuck, I can grab a file from there, and both Carbonite and Time Machine can back them up. Even Spotlight can index the files, although once I find what I'm looking for, I either need to open it from the "real" OneDrive folder or wait for GoodSync to run overnight.
It's a little overkill, but it works well enough that I can stop fighting Apple's and Microsoft's marketing decisions.
Still trying to get OD to work by limiting the number of files on it*. E.g. I have a folder with 7000 small files in it, I'm trying to zip it to a single file but: * I can't download an zip from OD Online, because it fails because it's not just OD for mac that's bad software
* I can't get OD for mac to sync my files so that I can zip them locally.
* I looked into power automate – couldn't find something to zip remotely – and transferring files to azure blob – but apparently that's not a thing
I will try to put my experience with this matter. I've been following this thread almost since it started (over 1 year ago) hoping that Microsoft will fix their OneDrive app (which was working great at first and suddenly that app has been hell to work with). I was using onedrive to sync my data (over 230GB) between a Windows computer and a MacOS laptop. As the people in the thread have been saying, suddenly the app began to consume a lot of resources and not leave the files offline. Although Microsoft added the famous "Download all OneDrive files now" button, it doesn't work and the files are still online. And what's more frustrating: when you try to open a file online, it spends minutes trying to sync and download it. I think I've waited long enough to see if Microsoft fixes the app and it doesn't look like they will and/or they want. Solution: I have switched to Google Drive and it works perfectly the first time. And it doesn't leave your laptop consuming resources. I don't know how it does it, but you can already see that there is a possible solution, but Microsoft doesn't want to implement it.
HenkdeB From what I've found, a third party sync may be your only solution. It's possible to tell OneDrive to keep files stored locally, but that can be inconsistent, and it still works only on your system drive. It's also possible to tell OneDrive to keep cached files on a different drive, but that is even more inconsistent, and the actual files still don't live in the OneDrive folder--just pointers to the files.
GoodSync isn't a service I've tried--I'll have to give it a look. All the other third party sync clients I've looked at or tried want to pull files from the cloud only when accessed, and they generally store the file cache somewhere other than where the files appear to live. This is largely where the industry is moving, accelerated by Apples Apple File Provider framework that they are forcing sync clients to use. Until there is enough pressure from people like photographers, who need to keep local copies of their synced files, I don't see that changing. It's an issue for lots of folks, but the cloud providers really want their users locked into their services.
Thank you both for the quick reply. My OneDrive comes with my Office subscription so I pay already for the cloud storage. I dropped OneDrive.app from the machine and put everything back in the original place under the user account. Then I started using my GoodSync service to sync the OneDrive-Cloud directly with the NAS. This gives the same file structure in the cloud as on my computer. Each machine syncs with GoodSync with the NAS. This seems to keep everything the same on each machine and it seems to work, and my NX Studio can find the files again. It is a workaround, but it works, H.
Any other suggestions to get OneDrive to work normally again is appreciated.

Removing conflicting icons for locally available files and enabling apps like Spotlight or Time Machine to index files

We’re rolling out a change in version 22.033, to change the behavior to improve how OneDrive surfaces locally available content. The cloud with a down arrow will not be present on that content, thus, removing confusion on whether content is available offline or requires internet connection to access. For most of you, this fix should be applied within a few hours after receiving the updated version.

With this change, “Always Keep on This Device” will work like it previously did before macOS 12.1. When performing the command, a checkmark is applied to the file, and the “not downloaded” cloud icon will be removed. The change that we are making is to ensure that all content that is marked “Always Keep on This Device” is also fetched into the OneDrive folder.

Apps like Spotlight and Time Machine will be able to index these locally available files without any special configuration.

Important: These changes only apply to you if you are not syncing your OneDrive to an external drive. If you are using an external drive, you will have a different experience detailed below.

Enabling a preference to sync all content locally
\n
\n
We’re also making it easier to keep all content synced locally if desired in version 22.033. Currently this is possible if you know where to look in the Finder, but we’ve made it easier with a new preference in the OneDrive Preferences window.

There are two new buttons in this dialog:

\n
\n
Download all OneDrive files now: This most closely replicates the experience of having Files On-Demand disabled. Clicking this button has the same effect as choosing “Always Keep on This Device” for your OneDrive folder. All files and folders will be marked as always available and will download to your device. All newly synced content will also be represented as always available. See below for how this works if you chose to sync your OneDrive to an external drive.

Download files as you use them: Clicking this button restores the default experience of using Files On-Demand. All newly synced files from the cloud will be online-only until the first time you use them. Any file you have previously marked “Always Keep on This Device” will remain available on this device but if disk space becomes low, the operating system can change these files to be available online-only to save disk space.

Important: You do not need to click either of these buttons. These options are helpful if you intend to customize your OneDrive experience.

Improving the experience when syncing to external drives
\n
\n
If you are syncing your OneDrive to an external drive (other than your home volume), starting in version 22.040, we will help you better identify what files are available locally. External drive support is limited by the File Provider platform. We will continue to partner with Apple on addressing feedback related to the platform in a future version of macOS.

\n
If you are syncing your OneDrive to an external drive, we will not be able to remove conflicting icons. Opening files will bring them into your OneDrive folder on the external drive and onto your home drive and allow you to open them without an internet connection. We will now show a hollow checkmark icon for content that is locally available, similar to what we showed before macOS 12.1. Files with a hollow checkmark can be become online-only if the operating system needs to save disk space.

If you want it always available, then be sure to mark the files as “Always Available on This Device.”

With this change, “Always Keep on This Device” will work like it previously did before macOS 12.1. When performing the command, a checkmark is applied to the file, and the “not downloaded” cloud icon will be removed. The change that we are making is to ensure that all content that is marked “Always Keep on This Device” is also fetched into the OneDrive folder.

Apps like Spotlight and Time Machine will be able to index these locally available files without any special configuration.

Important: These changes only apply to you if you are not syncing your OneDrive to an external drive. If you are using an external drive, you will have a different experience detailed below.

Enabling a preference to sync all content locally
\n
\n
We’re also making it easier to keep all content synced locally if desired in version 22.033. Currently this is possible if you know where to look in the Finder, but we’ve made it easier with a new preference in the OneDrive Preferences window.

There are two new buttons in this dialog:

Download all OneDrive files now: This most closely replicates the experience of having Files On-Demand disabled. Clicking this button has the same effect as choosing “Always Keep on This Device” for your OneDrive folder. All files and folders will be marked as always available and will download to your device. All newly synced content will also be represented as always available. See below for how this works if you chose to sync your OneDrive to an external drive.

Download files as you use them: Clicking this button restores the default experience of using Files On-Demand. All newly synced files from the cloud will be online-only until the first time you use them. Any file you have previously marked “Always Keep on This Device” will remain available on this device but if disk space becomes low, the operating system can change these files to be available online-only to save disk space.

Important: You do not need to click either of these buttons. These options are helpful if you intend to customize your OneDrive experience.

Improving the experience when syncing to external drives
\n
\n
If you are syncing your OneDrive to an external drive (other than your home volume), starting in version 22.040, we will help you better identify what files are available locally. External drive support is limited by the File Provider platform. We will continue to partner with Apple on addressing feedback related to the platform in a future version of macOS.
\n
\n
If you are syncing your OneDrive to an external drive, we will not be able to remove conflicting icons. Opening files will bring them into your OneDrive folder on the external drive and onto your home drive and allow you to open them without an internet connection. We will now show a hollow checkmark icon for content that is locally available, similar to what we showed before macOS 12.1. Files with a hollow checkmark can be become online-only if the operating system needs to save disk space.

If you want it always available, then be sure to mark the files as “Always Available on This Device.”

I just came across your post. Me, and some thousand others, seem to have these issues with that stupid \"user experience\" Microsoft implemented. For month now I am waiting for any replies on all these comments about that issue. But that arrogant Microsoft team give a s*. I then moved to iCloud (I am using a MacBook Pro as well) and I am soooo happy now.

This simply isn't working.
I moved from Dropbox a few weeks ago, as I suddenly found that files, which I have always had stored locally on my MacBook Pro's hard-drive, were suddenly and randomly 'cloud-only' and had to be re-downloaded.
Unfortunately, I've been experiencing exactly the same issue with my 160GB of files which are now in OneDrive. I have checked the 'keep on this device' and as of yesterday, all 160GB of files were stored locally. There were no conflicting 'cloud' download icons and all seemed well. This morning, I now see a huge number of cloud download icons, randomly, across my folder structure when I open Finder and look in my OneDrive folder. Looking at my drive capacity, I see that I now have another 60GB freed up, suggesting that local copies have mysteriously vanished and gone to 'on demand'.
I am getting sick of this. OneDrive seemingly switches to files on demand mode without me making any changes or requesting it. Weirdly, you click on the OneDrive icon in the bar at the top, and it says that all my files are sync'd (clearly not the case).
Am I going to have to seek a refund and change my cloud storage provider AGAIN?
My data is too precious to entrust to your service currently, even though I make sure to keep regular backups. It is just unreliable.

Gregleleu Yeah--that was kinda obscure. I wanted to cache my OD files on an external drive, and Apple File Provider wants to cache them in my Library folder on my system drive. I've got a 1TB internal drive on a recent Mac Mini, which can handle a local cache fine. The problem for me is that it only caches some files, and it breaks Spotlight, Time Machine, Carbonite, and a whole bunch of other stuff. On demand files aren't ready for prime time under any operating system.
OD has a hack that lets you cache files on an external drive, but I've found it to be really unreliable, and I can't get files to stay local even when I mark them to be. It also breaks the file status icons that let you know if a file is local or in the cloud. Worst of all, it corrupted files, and I didn't have backups because my local copies were whisked away to the cloud with no warning when OD started using AFP. That was the origin of the whole heated thread several years ago.
I tried Mountain Duck as well, and it seems like a good app, mostly. However, I had the same kinds of issues with large OD downloads either taking forever or not finishing at all, and I had the same issues with StrongSync and other apps I tried. GoodSync is different in that it doesn't even try to use AFP—it just monitors your cloud services and local folders and keeps the most current versions in both places. I currently have about 586GB of data on OD, and I keep about 500GB of that in a local mirror. Files on demand works for most things, and I keep a local copy in case of internet outage or MS skullduggery. It's a kinda geeky solution to the problem, but it lets me sleep at night.
One other advantage to GoodSync is that you can even use it to sync between different cloud services. That requires you to download the files and re-upload them across your Internet connection, but I've got a fairly fast connection and schedule the jobs to run overnight. There are cloud services to do this as well, but GoodSync works for my purposes.

But thanks for your message, it made me think of using cyberduck to connect to OD. It started working great, but then it got throttled after a few thousand files which is completely stupid. I'll see if I can find a workaround.

Gregleleu I finally gave up and let OneDrive store its cache on my system drive, which is what it and MacOS want to do. It generally works fine there. In order to keep local copies and backups of my files, I use GoodSync to sync a local version of my critical OneDrive folders on a large external drive. If I'm really stuck, I can grab a file from there, and both Carbonite and Time Machine can back them up. Even Spotlight can index the files, although once I find what I'm looking for, I either need to open it from the \"real\" OneDrive folder or wait for GoodSync to run overnight.
It's a little overkill, but it works well enough that I can stop fighting Apple's and Microsoft's marketing decisions.

Still trying to get OD to work by limiting the number of files on it*. E.g. I have a folder with 7000 small files in it, I'm trying to zip it to a single file but: * I can't download an zip from OD Online, because it fails because it's not just OD for mac that's bad software
* I can't get OD for mac to sync my files so that I can zip them locally.
* I looked into power automate – couldn't find something to zip remotely – and transferring files to azure blob – but apparently that's not a thing
Does someone have another idea?

I will try to put my experience with this matter. I've been following this thread almost since it started (over 1 year ago) hoping that Microsoft will fix their OneDrive app (which was working great at first and suddenly that app has been hell to work with). I was using onedrive to sync my data (over 230GB) between a Windows computer and a MacOS laptop. As the people in the thread have been saying, suddenly the app began to consume a lot of resources and not leave the files offline. Although Microsoft added the famous \"Download all OneDrive files now\" button, it doesn't work and the files are still online. And what's more frustrating: when you try to open a file online, it spends minutes trying to sync and download it. I think I've waited long enough to see if Microsoft fixes the app and it doesn't look like they will and/or they want. Solution: I have switched to Google Drive and it works perfectly the first time. And it doesn't leave your laptop consuming resources. I don't know how it does it, but you can already see that there is a possible solution, but Microsoft doesn't want to implement it.

HenkdeB From what I've found, a third party sync may be your only solution. It's possible to tell OneDrive to keep files stored locally, but that can be inconsistent, and it still works only on your system drive. It's also possible to tell OneDrive to keep cached files on a different drive, but that is even more inconsistent, and the actual files still don't live in the OneDrive folder--just pointers to the files.
GoodSync isn't a service I've tried--I'll have to give it a look. All the other third party sync clients I've looked at or tried want to pull files from the cloud only when accessed, and they generally store the file cache somewhere other than where the files appear to live. This is largely where the industry is moving, accelerated by Apples Apple File Provider framework that they are forcing sync clients to use. Until there is enough pressure from people like photographers, who need to keep local copies of their synced files, I don't see that changing. It's an issue for lots of folks, but the cloud providers really want their users locked into their services.

Thank you both for the quick reply. My OneDrive comes with my Office subscription so I pay already for the cloud storage. I dropped OneDrive.app from the machine and put everything back in the original place under the user account. Then I started using my GoodSync service to sync the OneDrive-Cloud directly with the NAS. This gives the same file structure in the cloud as on my computer. Each machine syncs with GoodSync with the NAS. This seems to keep everything the same on each machine and it seems to work, and my NX Studio can find the files again. It is a workaround, but it works, H.
Any other suggestions to get OneDrive to work normally again is appreciated.
