OneDrive became smarter, more collaborative, and more central to how work flows across Microsoft 365.

This spring, we're delivering what's next.

As OneDrive brings together intelligence, collaboration, cross-platform experiences, and enterprise control and governance, it helps you move work forward from the first file to the final outcome. That’s the idea at the center of this year’s innovations: helping individuals and teams move from file to finished faster, with greater clarity and confidence that their work is protected and ready wherever it happens.

Understand and act on your content

Agentic AI for files in SharePoint document libraries

Late last year, we introduced the AI Actions button in document libraries, giving you faster ways to find content, get answers, and take action on files with AI. In March, our AI in SharePoint release made it possible to use natural language not just to understand content, but to build and manage the systems around it, from pages and lists to libraries and structured document workflows. Today, we’re building on that foundation with new capabilities that help organizations capture shared context, create reusable skills for multi-step workflows, and generate documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and other structured outputs from content already stored in SharePoint. Together, these capabilities help you find the right content, understand it more quickly, organize it more effectively, create new deliverables from it, and share it with greater confidence.

AI experiences at work in OneDrive

Currently generally available, OneDrive brings AI directly into your everyday file experience. With the Copilot icon in OneDrive, you can instantly summarize documents, presentations, PDFs, and images, ask questions about your files, compare versions to spot what changed, recap meeting recordings, and extract key details from whiteboard images. Across capabilities like PDF review on the web, OCR on mobile, semantic search, and Ask Copilot in File Explorer, AI is helping users get to the right content faster, understand it more quickly, and take action without leaving the flow of work.

Markdown support in OneDrive and SharePoint

Now rolling out to general availability, Markdown file support is now in OneDrive and SharePoint, making it easier for you to create, view, and edit .md file content alongside the rest of your documents, without leaving your browser. Learn more in our blog here.

Review PDFs with Copilot in OneDrive and SharePoint for the web

Copilot is now generally available in the OneDrive and SharePoint PDF viewer. Select text, right-click, and use AI actions from the context menu. You can also write your own prompt if you have a specific question.

Optical character recognition (OCR) is now built into OneDrive for Android and iOS mobile apps to help you reuse information, speed up document workflows, and make content easier to find. Learn more here.

Offline search on OneDrive mobile

With offline search on iPad, you can quickly find files you’ve made available offline by searching by filename, even without an internet connection. Whether you’re reviewing documents on a flight or between meetings, you no longer need to manually browse through downloaded folders to locate what you need.

Semantic search in File Explorer on Copilot+ PCs

With semantic search¹ on Windows, OneDrive users can now find their files by describing what they're looking for rather than remembering exact file names, whether those files are stored locally or in the cloud. OneDrive makes this possible by surfacing both semantic photo results and lexical document matches from across your entire OneDrive library, right from File Explorer.

Ask Copilot in File Explorer

With the new Ask Copilot hover icon on File Explorer Home, now available in public preview for Windows Insiders, you can get AI insights on any of your recent OneDrive files. Your local and cloud OneDrive files show up natively in File Explorer Home, so Copilot is ready to summarize content, pull key details, or draft an email when you need it.

Simple and secure collaboration

Hero Links

Last year, we announced the Hero Link, a single link that controls access to your files, so you can quickly share content and clearly understand who has permission to view, edit, or reshare. Coming this summer, this updated sharing experience makes collaboration easier and gives you more control with a single, unified experience to both share and manage permissions.

Transfer ownership improvements

New updates to the transfer ownership experience help teams maintain continuity when someone leaves the organization. Rolling out to general availability in the coming weeks, managers can filter files by shared status, move content while retaining existing permissions, and take action using an updated email notice.

We've refreshed the SharePoint document library to make it easier to find, organize, and act on your files. Custom views and filters are now readily available, and a simplified command bar puts your most-used actions within reach. View customization, including conditional formatting and metadata-based organization, lives in a single, streamlined menu.

Stay in the flow of your work, wherever you are

Sync support for up to 1 million items on Windows

Now in public preview, OneDrive Sync now supports syncing up to 1 million items on Windows devices, helping teams manage large document libraries and shared content at scale without compromising access across devices. This preview requires the OneDrive Insiders ring, additional hardware requirements², and recommended configuration settings. Devices that don't meet these requirements continue to sync at the existing 300,000-item supported limit with no disruption.

We introduced a refreshed OneDrive sync experience on macOS, with a redesigned activity center and updated system dialogs that feel native on Mac. Built with technologies like SwiftUI, it aligns with modern macOS Liquid Glass design language and provides a cleaner, more responsive way to check sync status, recent activity, and issues that need attention. A simplified layout surfaces the essentials first, with more detail available when you need it. Read more about the new experience here.

File previewer refresh for iOS

With the new file previewer in OneDrive for iOS, users can view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files in app - no downloads required - with Microsoft 365 security and compliance enforced.

OneDrive command to move a local-only folder to OneDrive

You can now right‑click a folder in File Explorer and move the entire folder to OneDrive, preserving its structure and making it easier to back up large sets of files.

Custom OneDrive folder name GPO to help address max path issues

To reduce Windows file path length issues, IT admins can now set a custom name for the local OneDrive sync root folder on users’ devices. Now generally available, this policy lets organizations define a shorter, organization‑specific folder name while keeping the OneDrive experience consistent for users. The display name shown in File Explorer and the OneDrive Activity Center remains unchanged. There are other max path improvements on the way, so stay tuned!

Keep everything protected and in control

File-level archive in SharePoint

File-level archive in Microsoft 365 Archive lets organizations archive individual files in active SharePoint sites, moving inactive content to lower-cost storage without disrupting the site, now in public preview.

Security and usability must go hand in hand. With the new admin policy for expiring “People in your organization” links, you can now enable your users to collaborate and ensure that access gets cleaned up automatically. Configure expiration timeframes that align with your organization's data governance requirements, whether that's 30 days, 90 days, or a custom period.

Introducing Markdown support in SharePoint and OneDrive

As AI moves from answering questions to carrying out real work, teams need a reliable way to store, manage, and refine the instructions and context that guide how AI operates. Markdown files are increasingly becoming that foundation, acting as durable AI artifacts that capture rules, preferences, and repeatable processes.

Today, we’re introducing native Markdown support in SharePoint and OneDrive, now rolling out to general availability across both consumer and commercial audiences. As AI and agents increasingly create and update Markdown files to carry out work, teams need a reliable place to manage that content. SharePoint and OneDrive make it easy to view and edit these files in the browser when precision, intent, or changes are required, with built‑in versioning and governance. Markdown files are now fully integrated into the Microsoft 365 file experience, behaving like any other file in your workflow.

The updated .md file viewer introduces a modern reading experience directly in the browser across M365. Markdown files now render with modern typography, replacing the outdated styling of the previous experience. Tables, checkboxes, links, and code blocks all render correctly, with full syntax highlighting code blocks. Changes you make are reflected in real time.

For folks new to Markdown, the preview mode translates source Markdown into a more readable format, enabling you to review content stored as .md files.

Edit Markdown

The native Markdown editor enables teams to update .md files directly, right in SharePoint and OneDrive. Users can switch between View, Edit, and Split modes, with side‑by‑side editing and preview capabilities that reflect changes in real time. The editing experience includes a formatting toolbar that supports headings, code blocks, links, images, and lists, making it easier to update .md file content without needing to manually write syntax.

Create and access Markdown files

You can now create .md files directly in OneDrive or SharePoint using the Create or Upload button and easily find them using file type filters pills across views like Home, My Files, and Document Libraries and other views. Markdown files support the same actions and commands as other Microsoft 365 files.

Markdown powers skills in SharePoint and OneDrive

The true value of Markdown occurs when AI apps and agents make use of the knowledge in them. For example, today, we are announcing that AI in SharePoint can remember team preferences and learn skills that can be shared by the whole team. Behind the scenes, this group memory is powered by .md files stored in an all-new Agents Assets library, which uses these new Markdown viewing and editing capabilities to give team members the ability to see what AI in SharePoint remembers about the site. This is the first of many use cases where agents can leverage SharePoint and OneDrive content management capabilities to store knowledge and context.

One file, many surfaces

Because .md files live in OneDrive and SharePoint, they're accessible everywhere Microsoft 365 content flows, from SharePoint sites and OneDrive folders to shared links opened in Teams, Outlook, and the browser. Author a .md file once and it's available to the people, tools, and AI experiences that need it.

OneDrive Sync Up Episode 22: File Archive with Trent Green

If you've been using site archive to manage cold data, you know the value of moving inactive content to cheaper storage. But sometimes you don't want to archive an entire site — you just need to archive specific files that haven't been touched in years. That's exactly what file archive lets you do. On this month's episode of Sync Up, Trent gave us a live demo showing how simple the experience is: Select your files, click archive, done. He also walked through the 7-day instant undo window (in case you archive something by accident) and shared how file archive can improve your Copilot experience too!

File archive is coming to public preview in March 2026 for SharePoint sites. Admin-driven archive policies are on the roadmap for later this year.

OneDrive on Mac gets Liquid Glass with an All-New Activity Center

OneDrive on macOS is a core part of the OneDrive ecosystem, designed to deliver a great experience for working with your files directly on your Mac. Over the years, we’ve continued to improve OneDrive for Mac, and we’ve also listened closely to your feedback. We want OneDrive to feel truly native on macOS, with a fast, reliable sync experience you can count on every day.

Over the past several years our team has been working behind the scenes to make the macOS experience better. Today, we’re shipping two major improvements coming soon to OneDrive on macOS:

An all-new Mac-first experience in the OneDrive Activity Center, giving you clean sync status and control that embraces the visual design of the Mac, including support for Liquid Glass on macOS 26 and beyond.

New Mac-native dialogs with the familiar look and feel of macOS 26.

The new Activity Center

The all-new OneDrive Activity Center on the Mac is the small window that appears when you click on the OneDrive icon in the menu bar, and right away you’ll notice the new, snappier interface that embraces the Swift UI design language, including support for Liquid Glass on macOS 26.

The design is simple and straightforward, showing only essential information initially and letting you easily explore further details as needed. It also offers enhanced accessibility options such as VoiceOver and Full Keyboard Access, making OneDrive easier for everyone to use than ever before.

The list of changes you’ve made to your OneDrive is just a click away, and shows you the same information as before, but in a more compact, easier way to understand. Additionally, images and videos that appear here show a helpful thumbnail of the content when available, making it easier to identify what files changed.

If you encounter an error or anything else that requires your attention, you can easily access it with just one click.

The new Activity Center is built entirely in SwiftUI, and it looks and works great on any version of macOS where OneDrive runs.

Mac-native dialogs

When using OneDrive, you'll sometimes see dialogs that provide information or prompt action—for example, when deleting a file for the first time, you learn how deletions work in OneDrive. These task dialogs are now built with native Mac controls to better fit its look and feel.

Agents in OneDrive Now Generally Available: Your AI Assistant Built with Your Own Content

If you’ve ever wished Copilot could remember the context of a project, understand the documents your team already relies on, or answer repeat questions without retracing your steps, Agents in OneDrive were built for you.

Rather than asking Copilot the same questions across individual files, you can now create an Agent that understands an entire set of documents, project plans, specs, meeting notes, research, or decks, and responds with answers grounded in your content.

What is an agent in OneDrive?

Think of an agent as a focused AI teammate built from your own files and folders. You choose the content, and the agent uses it to:

Answer questions across multiple documents at once
Summarize discussions, decisions, and key takeaways
Surface owners, deadlines, risks, and action items
Keep shared context intact as work evolves

Agents are saved directly in OneDrive as .agent files, just like a document or spreadsheet. Open one, and you’re dropped into a full-screen Copilot experience that stays centered on that specific project or topic.

Creating an Agent in OneDrive

Getting started is simple and requires no special admin setup.

You’ll need OneDrive on the web and a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. From there, you can:

Select + Create or upload and choose Create an agent
Or select files and choose Create an agent from the toolbar or right‑click menu

Pick up to 20 files, name your agent, add optional instructions, and save. Your Agent immediately appears in OneDrive as a .agent file.

Agents in OneDrive are now generally available worldwide for OneDrive on the web. A Microsoft 365 Copilot license is required.

Because agents stay tied to the content you select, they’re especially powerful for work that spans people, time, and files.

Get clarity fast without digging through folders:

“What decisions have we made so far?”
“What’s still open, and who owns it?”

Agents behave like any other file in OneDrive. You can search for them, filter by file type, open them, and update them as work progresses. As projects change, you can add or remove files or refine instructions, so your agent stays aligned with the latest information.

Sharing an agent is just as easy. Share it with teammates like a regular OneDrive file. As long as collaborators have access to the source documents, the agent can provide complete, grounded responses keeping everyone aligned without extra handoffs.

Get answers fast: Ask Copilot questions about your files, like “What are the main action items in this deck?” or “Show me changes from this document since the last version.”

Generating an audio overview with Copilot on the OneDrive mobile app

Audio overviews: Choose either executive or podcast-style summary, and Copilot will create an audio file with key insights from your document, perfect for catching up on the go whether you’re in the OneDrive mobile app or on OneDrive for Web.

The hero link simplifies sharing with a single, primary link that governs access, identical to the address bar URL. You can update permissions (e.g., expand to your org) without changing the link. And before you share, Copilot can generate a quick summary, so recipients open with context. It’s simple, predictable, and built to reduce “access denied” moments.

For many of us, our digital lives are organized within the familiar folders and files of OneDrive. Whether it’s cherished family photos, important school assignments, or household documents, OneDrive keeps your files accessible, safe, and organized. And with Copilot, we have brought new ways for you to get information quickly. Now, we are bringing Copilot for OneDrive files to File Explorer and the OneDrive Activity Center—a new way to make working with your files easier, smarter, and more efficient on your Windows PC.

How can you use Copilot for your files?

Users can access Copilot features for their files from OneDrive Activity Center

We are bringing the power of AI directly into your daily file management experience. With just a few clicks, Copilot can help you summarize lengthy documents, generate an FAQ, compare files, or answer questions about your file.

To get started, make sure your files are saved in OneDrive and that you’re signed in with your Microsoft 365 Personal or Family account.

File Explorer: simply open File Explorer on your Windows device. When you select a file* stored in OneDrive, right click and hover over OneDrive in the context menu- you’ll notice a new set of Copilot options.

OneDrive Activity Center: open the OneDrive Activity Center (OneDrive icon in your taskbar or notification area) and find the file*. Click on More options to access the Copilot actions you can perform on the file.

Who can use these features?

To access these features, you’ll need a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family account, and your files must be stored in OneDrive to access OneDrive features. They are now available to subscribers, so you can try them today!

What can Copilot do with my files?

Summarize: generate a concise, easy-to-understand summary of a document’s content. Perfect for when you need a quick refresher or want to decide which file to review in detail.
Create an FAQ: puts together a list of “Frequently Asked Questions” related to your document.
Ask a question: have a specific question? Just ask Copilot and it will return the answer from your file.
Compare files (File Explorer only): creates a concise table highlighting differences between multiple files (up to 5).

Tips for Maximizing Your Copilot Experience

Keep files in OneDrive. If your files are stored locally or on another service, you can move them to OneDrive for the best experience.
Stay signed in. Use your Microsoft 365 Personal or Family account to unlock all Copilot features. If you see Copilot options missing, check your account status and subscription.
Try different file types. Copilot actions work with different file types*.
Give feedback. We’re always working to improve Copilot. Use the built-in feedback tools to let us know what works well and what you’d like to see in the future.

OneDrive for Mac Now Supports Removable Drives

Earlier this year, we announced support for several improvements to OneDrive for Mac, including support for external, non-removable drives.

We’ve heard feedback about the differences between “non-removable” and removable drives, and wanting the flexibility to sync OneDrive to any external drive—no matter the type. Now, with OneDrive version 25.127 or later, you can seamlessly sync your OneDrive files to any external drive, including removable ones.

Syncing to a removable drive works just like any other drive, except that if you unplug your drive, OneDrive will stop syncing and show an error. You’ll need to plug your drive back in and restart OneDrive to resume syncing. There’s a short grace period between when a drive gets disconnected and when OneDrive shows an error to handle drives that sporadically disconnect.

There are a few requirements your system must meet to use this feature:

You’ll need version 25.127 or later of OneDrive.
You also need to be running macOS 15.0 or later.
The drive you select must meet the following requirements:
- Formatted for APFS
- Protected by FileVault (see below for instructions)
- Not read-only, a network drive, or marked as quarantined by macOS.

Just like before, you'll need to manually set up a new sync relationship on the new drive. Sync settings won't transfer automatically.

You cannot use OneDrive by moving your external drive between Macs; you must set up OneDrive again on each new Mac with the external drive.

To protect a drive with FileVault:

Format the drive for case-insensitive APFS, if it is not already.
Find the drive in the Finder.
Option/right click the drive and choose Encrypt.
Follow the prompts.
