Copilot in Outlook now writes like you: Personalize drafts + email compose in Copilot Chat

Over the last few months, Microsoft 365 Copilot received several updates that change how we write email. I tested them and put together a step-by-step video. Here's a summary for users, admins and adoption teams.

 

🔹 1. Personalize drafts in Outlook

 

Until now, we could guide Copilot only with Custom Instructions, for example:

• Keep emails short

• Be professional but friendly

• Use a specific greeting

• End with a particular sign-off

 

Personalization adds another layer. When it's enabled, Copilot learns from your previous emails and adapts its drafts to the way you naturally write.

 

📍 Where to find it: Outlook → Settings → Copilot → Draft instructions → Personalize drafts

⚠️ Currently available only in the new Outlook for Windows. It isn't available in classic Outlook.

 

🔹 2. Draft, edit and send email in Copilot Chat on desktop (MC1247637)

 

When Copilot detects an email-writing intent, it opens an embedded Outlook compose form directly in Copilot Chat. Users can:

• Edit the email content

• Modify recipients

• Send the email from within Copilot Chat

• Open the draft in Outlook to continue editing

 

Key details:

• Available in the Copilot Chat desktop app (not in the mobile app or the chat sidebar)

• On by default for eligible users

• Requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and an Exchange Online mailbox

• Existing Outlook and Exchange Online policies, including DLP, continue to apply

• No new admin controls or configuration changes

• Not yet available in DoNMT environments

 

🔹 3. Email drafts in Copilot Chat on mobile (MC1462472)

 

On mobile, Copilot Chat shows an embedded Outlook draft so users can review it and then open it in Outlook Mobile to edit and send.

• Platforms: Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app, Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, Exchange Online

• Enabled by default for eligible users

• No admin configuration required

• Tell your helpdesk and end users about the new drafting experience in Copilot Chat

• Update internal documentation that describes Copilot Chat workflows

• Review which users are licensed for Microsoft 365 Copilot

• Remind users that Personalize drafts is only in the new Outlook for Windows
