Exchange Online Exchange Hybrid Server Limitation

Hi Fellows.

I have a customer who is completely in Office 365.
Now wants to have a hybrid Exchange infrastructure on-premises for email relay and ex-employees mailbox off-boarding (without buying any licenses for on-premises Exchange Server. - hence within the hybrid license benefit covered by Office 365).

Customer has multiple data centers around the world.

I want to know what are the limitations for Exchange Hybrid Server.
How many Hybrid Exchange servers can be deployed?
How big a Office 365 licensed Hybrid server infrastructure can be for example multiple mailbox servers with DAG and load balancing?

Is there any reference mentioning such limitations?

any support will be highly appreciated.

  • Hi Junaid,

If your customer is completely in Office 365 and AAD Connect is not running, I wouldn't install directory synchronization and Exchange hybrid only for email relay and ex-employees mailbox offboarding.

    1. E-Mail relay can be every smtp service, like the IIS SMTP service (depending on the functionality, maybe you can share some more details).

    2. Ex-employee offboarding: you can use inactive mailboxes in Office 365 and store the content of those users for an unlimited time frame and there is no license needed for this.

  • Hi Junaid,

You have to meet the below conditions.

You can request a Hybrid Edition product key if all the following conditions apply to you:

    • You have an existing, non-trial, Office 365 subscription.
    • You currently do not have a licensed Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2010 SP3 server in your on-premises organization.
    • You will not host any on-premises mailboxes on the Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2010 SP3 server on which you apply the Hybrid Edition product key.

You can have may hybrid servers that you need but you cannot have any on-premises mailboxes on it.
