Update April 18, 2024: the preview of Office LTSC 2024 is now available.

Microsoft 365 offers the cloud-backed apps, security, and storage that customers worldwide rely on to achieve more in a connected world – and lays a foundation for leveraging generative AI to go even further. However, we know that some customers have niche yet important scenarios that require a truly long-term servicing channel: regulated devices that cannot accept feature updates for years at a time, process control devices on the manufacturing floor that are not connected to the internet, and specialty systems like medical testing equipment that run embedded apps that must stay locked in time. For these special cases, Microsoft continues to offer and support the Office Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC). Today we are pleased to announce that the commercial preview of the next Office LTSC release – Office LTSC 2024 – will begin next month, with general availability to follow later this year.

About this release

Like earlier perpetual versions of Office, Office LTSC 2024 will include only a subset of the value found in Microsoft 365 Apps, building on the features included in past releases. New features for Office LTSC 2024 include: new meeting creation options and search enhancements in Outlook, dozens of new Excel features and functions including Dynamic Charts and Arrays; and improved performance, security, and accessibility.  Office LTSC 2024 will not ship with Microsoft Publisher, which is being retired, or with the Microsoft Teams app, which is available to download separately.

While Office LTSC 2024 offers many significant improvements over the previous Office LTSC release, as an on-premises product it will not offer the cloud-based capabilities of Microsoft 365 Apps, like real-time collaboration; AI-driven automation in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; or cloud-backed security and compliance capabilities that give added confidence in a hybrid world. And with device-based licensing and extended offline access, Microsoft 365 offers deployment options for scenarios like computer labs and submarines that require something other than a user-based, always-online solution. Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) is also required to subscribe to Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365; as a disconnected product, Office LTSC does not qualify.

As with previous releases, Office LTSC 2024 will still be a device-based “perpetual” license, supported for five years under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy, in parallel with Windows 11 LTSC, which will also launch later this year. And because we know that many customers deploy Office LTSC on only a subset of their devices, we will continue to support the deployment of both Office LTSC and Microsoft 365 Apps to different machines within the same organization using a common set of deployment tools.

Office LTSC is a specialty product that Microsoft has committed to maintaining for use in exceptional circumstances, and the 2024 release provides substantial new feature value for those scenarios. To support continued innovation in this niche space, Microsoft will increase the price of Office LTSC Professional Plus, Office LTSC Standard, Office LTSC Embedded, and the individual apps by up to 10% at the time of general availability. And, because we are asked at the time of release if there will be another one, I can confirm our commitment to another release in the future.

We will provide additional information about the next version of on-premises Visio and Project in the coming months.

Office 2024 for consumers

We are also planning to release a new version of on-premises Office for consumers later this year: Office 2024. Office 2024 will also be supported for five years with the traditional “one-time purchase” model. We do not plan to change the price for these products at the time of the release. We will announce more details about new features included in Office 2024 closer to general availability.

Embracing the future of work

The future of work in an AI-powered world is on the cloud. In most customer scenarios, Microsoft 365 offers the most secure, productive, and cost-effective solution, and positions customers to unlock the transformative power of AI with Microsoft Copilot. Especially as we approach the end of support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 in October 2025, we encourage customers still using these solutions to transition to a cloud subscription that suits their needs as a small business or a larger organization. And for scenarios where that is not possible – where a disconnected, locked-in-time solution is required – this new release reflects our commitment to supporting that need.

I think this is a good version to update on a suggestion is to add publisher and give it dozens of new features. also why not do the same thing with access. designer can be retired, instead why not add publisher and access for the web. and add all designer stuff to publisher. also, I think it would be a cool idea if there were separate downloads for very updated versions of older apps lie InfoPath and binder. also please make desktop apps for sway and forms that are not web based. also new desktop apps for bookings and delve please. add Visio and Project to the Microsoft store. and last but not least add easter eggs it would be funny. add all this and office 2024 will be great milestone version. @TJ_Devine question, if an organisation has configured "Cloud Policy" in "config.office.com", someone logon on a Windows 10 LTSC device with Office LTSC version (for example 2024, or older), will "Cloud Policy" apply (if device is internet connected), or does only on-premises GPO apply?

Because "Cloud Policy" wins over "GPO", but if Office 2024 LTSC does not support it, only GPO will apply.

For example for Lab Devices, they are internet connected, but Office/Windows feature updates are not allowed because of specific software which depends on specific Office version.

Same question for BYOD, if someone enrolled a Windows BYOD (Personal) device into intune, has installed "Office 2024" installed for private reasons, starts Office, will Cloud-Policy work? (can you logon with M365 corporate account in Office?)

@TJ_Devine Will third party login dialog use the Webview2 or Trident(IE11) engine?

NOTE: The change was applied to Version 2210: October 03 Build 15726.20000 but has never made it to a release version.

Office Suite

WebView2 For Third Party Sign-In: This feature updates the current browser engine utilized by the sign-in dialog from Internet Explorer to the chromium-based WebView2 (Microsoft Edge).

UPDATE: 4/29/24

Installed Office 2024 LTSC and confirmed it still uses IE11/Trident engine for third party login. :(

We are using ForgeRock as our SSO and cannot login to Microsoft cloud services as they (ForgeRock) require modern JS for current versions.

@Vladdy_Prosa What release channel did you use to download?

I tried "ProPlus2024Volume" for Product and "PerpetualVL2024" for Channel but received Build 2403 / 17425.20058.

Microsoft

@jamesisgood Thanks for that feedback. Please enter it at the Microsoft 365 apps feedback portal. Feedback entered there will get back to the correct product group, whereas here it's a comment on a blog that the PG may not be reading.

For the Mac version, what will the system requirements be for Office 2024 LTSC?

Can Microsoft add a featuer to Office 2024 LTSC based around a user based GPO / policy to force the use of Viewer Mode (similar to this Overview of viewer mode for Microsoft 365 Apps - Deploy Office | Microsoft Learn) for the Visio and Project SKU's even if they've already acquired a device license from KMS?

The use case is we have some users logging onto devices with KMS licensed Visio and Project LTSC installs but only want them to be able to open them in Viewer Mode so would like to be able to force certain Office/M365 SKU's into Viewer Mode irrespective of licensing status.

Will Office 2024 LTSC solve the problem where if you switch off all connected experiences Use policy settings to manage privacy controls for Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise - Deploy Office... it also prevents the ability to use on premise Web addins sourced from internal Sharepoint or Network drives.

This has always felt incorrect that Insert > My-Addins in Excel for example gets fully disabled as there are on premise methods of sourcing those add-ins (Deploy and publish Office Add-ins - Office Add-ins | Microsoft Learn), e.g. Sideloading, Network share, on premise Sharepoint, etc.

Ideally only addins sourced from external M365 hosted services should be prevented from being added when wider Office Connected services are disabled.

Microsoft

@BradMacPro The macOS requirements will be the same as previous versions: "Office for Mac is supported on the three most recent versions of macOS. As new major versions of macOS are made generally available, Microsoft will stop support for the oldest version and support the newest and previous two versions of macOS. Product functionality and feature availability may vary on older systems. For the best experience, use the latest version of any operating system specified above."

@TJ_Devine Q: Will there be support for Office LTSC 2024 installed on Windows Server 2025 or Windows Server 2022?

Microsoft

@KayReinke Yes, Office LTSC 2024 will be supported on Windows Server 2025 and Windows Server 2022.

It is still unsupportet to install the new Office with Windows RDS?
According to this link it is not possible to install Office with Remote Desktop Services:

Microsoft
Hi @Sertac-Topal, the AIP add-in is in retirement mode and will be officially deprecated at the end of this month. It won’t be supported for any version of Office.
Note that AIP is not a feature of Office – it’s a standalone product that provides an add-in. Customers with AIP can use it until the end of April, but beyond that will need to migrate to Microsoft 365 Apps to continue using sensitivity labeling. Please reach out to AIP2MIPGetHelp@microsoft.com with any additional questions.

@elisabeth-jones Will there be a support on Windows Server 2019 with the RDS Role? Until Jan 09 2029?

And the support on Windows Server 2022 includes the RDS Support? Until Oct 14, 2031?

@TJ_DevineUser choice and customization is very important to me. Will we be able to collapse and hide the search box on all the apps, including Outlook, if we choose? Thank you in advance.

I get the "office updates" every week or so being on the insider program.  However, when I click what's new, the newest post is from 2 years ago.  When I look to the Excel Blog, it only lists updates for the previous month.  How do I find out what in the world is getting updated at the time of the update?

Copper Contributor

yes Microsoft office 2024 will close the gap!

Copper Contributor

will office 2024 be offered as an upgrade to 2021 with upgrade pricing?

Any notice about OneNote? What is the future for this product? Previously I heard about plans to merge Windows 10 OneNote and Office OneNote to one app. Any updates about this plans?
