Trying to resize table

Copper Contributor

Hello, Please help. I hit a wrong key and it expanded my table. Now I'm having a problem trying to resize the table. The error message says, "the area I'm trying to delete is too large". How can I resize this table?

If your Excel table has expanded beyond your intended size, and you are encountering the error message that the area you are trying to delete is too large, you can follow these steps to resize the table:

  1. Select the Table:
    • Click anywhere within the table that you want to resize. You should see the "Table Design" contextual tab appear on the ribbon.
  2. Table Design Tab:
    • Go to the "Table Design" tab on the ribbon.
  3. Resize Table:
    • Look for the "Resize Table" group on the "Table Design" tab. You should see two options: "Resize Table" and "Convert to Range."
  4. Use "Resize Table":
    • Click on the "Resize Table" button. This will open a dialog box.
  5. Adjust Table Range:
    • In the "Resize Table" dialog box, you will see the current range of your table selected in the "Table Array" field.
    • Adjust the range to include only the data you want in your table. You can do this by changing the cell references manually in the "Table Array" field or by clicking and dragging to select the new range in your worksheet.
  6. Confirm and Resize:
    • Once you have adjusted the range to your desired size, click the "OK" button in the dialog box.
  7. Check the Table:
    • Your table should now be resized to the new range you specified.
  8. Adjust Formatting (if needed):
    • After resizing the table, you may need to adjust any formatting or formulas that were affected by the change in table size.

By following these steps, you should be able to resize your table to the desired range without encountering the "area is too large" error. Just make sure that the new range you select or specify in the "Resize Table" dialog box contains the data you want to include in your table.

Thank you for your help but, I have tried that and it won't allow me to change it. I get this error message.
