Excel help with cell length

So I'm trying to limit a column of cells up to 40 characters.  however, when I use the fixed width feature I will be cutting words in half.  How do I make my cells no more than 40 characters to include the last word or numerical value isn't cut in half.

examples:

last word is..... NEW YORK...., but after 40 characters the cell ends with NEW YO, so the next cell starts with "RK".  I want it to end with NEW and next cell contain the whole word YORK instead of starting with "RK".

last numerical value is...... IS 10"X9"........, and after 40 characters it cuts off the cell at 10 and the next cell starts with ", when I want it to end with IS, and next cell start with 10"X9"

Keep in mind I'm not messing with one cell.  I have a column of thousands of cells I'd like to formulate one cell and just double click the bottom right corner to copy the formula to the rest of the column.  PLEASE HELP AND THANK YOU

What do you mean by "Next cell" precisely, sounds as if you need two cells: one with the first 40 characters and one with the spill. And what if the spill cell has more than 40 characters? Another spill?
