Assigning letters a specific value

New to Excel. I'm trying to assign a basic number to letters that will allow me to total various sums.

Where would I begin?

You could use the CODE() function which will return a number for each letter. For example, "A" is 65, "B" is 66, "Z" is 90, etc.
