Hello everyone and thanks for your significant interest in our feedback item of “Provide run / open / save as options when downloading files”. This has been a very interesting problem to think through. The downloads team would love your thoughts on whether we have identified the main customer needs such a feature would need to address.

We believe that there are three main things being asked for:

  1. You would like a way to open a file without having to keep it on your computer so that your downloads folder remains “clean” (eg. You want to view your bank statement, but want it deleted after you are finished looking at it)
  2. You would like a way to choose the filename and location to save the downloaded file so that you can better organize your downloads (eg. You download a family photo IMG_1502.jpg and want to rename it to Reunion2019.jpg and save it in your Photos folder)
  3. You still want a light-weight downloads process that does not require many clicks (eg. User wants to download multiple photos in succession and move them in bulk afterwards without having to click “Save” each time). This is what our downloads flow currently addresses; one click to download.
  4. You would like a way to easily switch between (1), (2), and (3) for different files you are downloading; one size does not fit all (eg. For bank statements, you want to just open it, and have it deleted afterwards. But for family photos, you want to be able to rename and save to a specific location).

Do you think we are thinking in the right direction? We are still exploring possible solutions to this problem and any additional feedback is most welcome!

1 (open a file) - yes! Often I just need to print a PDF file, but in Insider Edge I have to download it and stick it on my desktop first. (I don't put temporary files in my downloads folder because I'll lose them.)

2 (rename a file) - Sometimes! The real problem with the downloads folder is how confusing it gets. For example, I have no idea what

clipboard_image_0.png

is, but it went into my downloads folder last month. Twice. (If you're wondering, I opened it and it stands for "FOSSwire Unix/Linux Reference".) There is currently no option to "Move and rename" a file directly from the downloads bar. One must either click on Options, then Show in Folder, or else turn on "Ask where to save each file before downloading".

3 (download many things) - Maybe? I don't download multiple files very often. I have done it once in recent memory; I had "Ask where to save each file before downloading" turned on at the time. This made the situation much slower. However, I tried out the "default" in Edge Dev just now, and similarly to the issue with 2, there is no button to "move all to folder" after the files have been downloaded and are visible in the downloads bar.

4 (doing all 3 together) - 99% of the time, I want to "run / open" my files. My advice will probably heavily favor this style. When trying to come up with a solution, the big question I had was "should we rename and move the files as each is downloaded or after all have been downloaded?" If we choose what happens to each file as it is downloaded, we have to "confirm" each download as it happens. With a lot of files, that's a lot of confirmation clicks. Thus, it would be better to save every file to the default folder with one click, but then allow the user to edit the file name/location directly from the Downloads Bar. Thus, each file would have options to "open/run", "move to folder" and "rename" from its options menu in the downloads bar, and on the right side of the bar, the Show all button would be complemented with "move all" and "open all" buttons. If you download a variety of files all at once, you might want to save most of them but also open one or two. An [x] could be placed to the right of each file's Options button, and its tooltip would say "close" to prevent confusion with "deleting" the recently downloaded file.

There are two obvious issues with my proposal:

A: If you move a few files to custom locations, then "move all" files, what happens? Edge can't force-remove a file from the downloads bar immediately after it has been moved by the user; many people would probably want move and then access their files.

B: The term "open" is very problematic when files are automatically downloaded. In Classic Edge, there was a clear choice between opening OR saving a file. In my system, Saving THEN opening sounds like the file will remain in the downloads folder. Synonyms for open, like "view" or "open temporarily", do no better to address this problem.

Considering these problems, my proposal might not be possible at all. I hope it is, or that this post is helpful more generally, at least.

@Elliot Kirk I'd like to see the file opening and save feature as it's done in the old edge. For example. I click on the link to download the mp3 file. no matter what size it is and should be asked to open the and store. So it works in the old edge. the same way with program installation files. very convenient when I can install the program without keeping it in the folder.

Hi @Elliot Kirk

It's so good to see the team are listening to the feedback, specially this one,

  1. Yes, that's totally right. another example would be when a user downloads a software setup file and only wants to run it in order to install that software and does not need to keep that setup file afterwards. I think the team should be familiar with the "run / open / save / save as options" because it's been one of the unique features of all Microsoft browsers such as Internet Explorer and the classic Edge browser.
  2. Right again, this is where "save as" comes into play where we can choose both the file name and location.
  3. Yes, with options like "run / open / save / save as" available, it will decrease the user interactions because without those options, user would need to manually open file explorer, go to downloads folder and do the rest.
  4. Not really. there doesn't need to be different behaviors for different file types. again just like in Internet Explorer and the classic Edge :)
  5. I want to add a 5th suggestion which I really hope you consider it because it's very useful, I've explained all the aspects of it on a different thread that I made a while ago
the title is "Let us Choose Download Location For each File Type separately in Edge insider browser" please take a look

@HotCakeX  You are right. the ability to open a file without saving was a feature of Microsoft browsers. Hopefully the new edge will also acquire this.

There are a lot of Download managers out there, free and paid, i think Microsoft should make it's own, perhaps integrated version. Free and paid for those that carry out a lot of D/L..

An integrated download manager sounds good :)

@Deleted and @HotCakeX, I am interested in learning more about what you mean by an "integrated download manager".

What are some potential features you would want in a download manager?

Highlighted

Thanks for the thoughtful replies everyone. I am the PM for downloads who wrote the copy for @Elliot Kirk 's post on this thread.

It seems that (1) and (2) resonated most with people so far. With (3), I am speaking specifically about the current download experience, where all you need to do is click the link and the download starts.

Spartan's model requires an additional user interaction (clicking on Run/Save/Save as).

Is there any concern that if we adopt Spartan's model, there is an additional barrier to access your downloads? Instead of 1 click, it requires 2 clicks for each download to be saved to your computer if we take Spartan's Run/Save/Save as modal for each download.

Highlighted

Hi,
for me one of the features is the speed of the download manager and how many concurrent connections it makes to host servers (I know parallel downloading flag is available)
and more important than that, is the ability to Resume failed or broken downloads. if a download is failed due to internet connection loss or unexpected shut down etc, Edge insider can't resume it, but 3rd party download managers can, such as IDM, so even if the file URL or the file name is changed, the download manager would detect the exact part and resume the download from there. this happens lots of times, specially for links that have limited availability period.

and lastly, the ability to choose separate default folder locations for each file types, more info here:
https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Discussions/Let-us-Choose-Download-Location-For-each-File-Typ...

I believe all of these features and improvements can be applied to the new Edge browser and in this page where there are so much vacant space left to add new options.

edge://settings/downloads

thanks :)

@i-am-kent I don't think it's a problem. if you have to make 2 clicks as it was in the old edge.

I prefer the download experience to be like Classic Edge.

@Elliot Kirk

  1. Although this was a mainstay of IE, I think this "Open" button actually needs to die. The reason? Storage Sense. Windows 10's Storage Sense can automatically clean up the Downloads folder of old things we only needed temporarily (like program installers or things to print). The "Open" button of IE caused unneeded confusion, because people wanted to save AND open, and making them choose just confused them. Not to mention if you open a file and then decide you want to save it, you have to re-download it or use "Save As..." in whatever program opened it. If you treat the entire Downloads folder as the new, simply more visible, temporary cache, the "Open" button is unnecessary. Simply save everything, then offer to open if desired. If you really want to keep an Open button, you can leave an option to re-enable it in settings, but leave it off by default.
  2. This is something I do a lot, and right now, all major browsers make you either always open the Save As dialog or open the downloads folder and move stuff afterwards, messing with the download history. Some others suggested a button to move everything after downloading, which I think is an AMAZING idea. Put a button on the download bar on the right side where the useless "Show All" button is right now, that says something like "Move Downloads", which will open the Select Folder dialog box and move whatever files you just downloaded and are on the download bar into a folder you choose. You can also have an option to "Move & Rename" for each file, accessible via the ... button on each download. I prefer the former over the latter, but both would be great!
  3. Yes! Lightweight and fast is key. In my work, I use a website which recently forced me to download a bunch of files individually in succession (bad website design, but nothing I can do). I don't want to answer Open or Save for every file in that case.
  4. Interestingly, Firefox already allows you to set a default option per file type. The problem is file type is not an accurate predictor of contents of the file (family photo and clip-art might both be .jpg files), so that is not so great. If you use my suggestions in #1 and #2, I think those fixes will cover all scenarios you mention in #4, except wanting to delete a file immediately after viewing. For that, you could optionally add another option to the ... button for each download that says something like "Open Once" or "Open & Delete". When the user chooses that, transparently move the file from the Downloads folder to the traditional temporary cache where IE and classic Edge would store files to be "opened" instead of saved. Then, open the file from there, and delete the file from there as you would have done before if the user had clicked "Open" in Edge. In other words, assume the user normally wants to save to Downloads, because that is what Chrome does, it is faster, and it prevents unwanted loss of data, but provide the option to change your mind afterwards by marking the file as temporary.

I know these changes may sound radical now, but so was the idea of Microsoft making a Chromium-based browser.
I would be happy to further clarify any of my suggestions. Thank you for designing a browser based on community suggestions!

Highlighted

@DinosaurTim just thinking as a fellow downloads user right now, not a Microsoft employee, but your view of downloads as a temporary cache is really interesting to me.  If there were a checkbox either in our "clear browsing data every time you close the browser" page or the downloads section to empty the Downloads folder every time you close the browser, that would definitely fix the issue of files laying around on my machine.  We also wouldn't need the open/run button at all, since it would still take the same number of clicks to get a file open:  instead of clicking the link, then "Open" before the download starts like we currently do in Edge Legacy, it would be clicking the link, then clicking its entry on the Downloads bar after it's finished downloading to open it.  I guess the only difference is maybe time, since I have to notice when it's done instead of just waiting and having it pop up as soon as it's finished.

Highlighted

@i-am-kent I'm not a technical person so I'm not sure if this is possible but for #3, could it be implemented like opening a new tab.

Where clicking a download link, by default, will just download it (like the current experience) but if the user holds down CTRL and then clicks the download link it then prompts the "Run/Save/Save As" (or the other way round).

Highlighted

@josh_bodnerAn option to delete downloaded files on close sounds like a great idea, as long it only affects downloads from that session, not everything in the folder. (If someone has something already there, or something downloaded from another browser, that should not be deleted by Edge.) Also, I'd keep the option to delete downloaded files separate form the existing option to clear download history. Some might want one but not the other.

About your second point, the great thing about how Chromium Edge currently works is that you can click on the download while it is still in progress in the download bar, and it will open once downloading is finished (or your can choose to always open files of this type). The number of clicks is the same like you said, and it actually saves time, because the download can start faster than I can click open. All that changes is the order: click Open and then start downloading in classic Edge/IE vs start downloading and then click Open like current Chromium Edge.

Highlighted
My reasons for this request are covered by option 1 but are mainly about saving time.

I work in IT, and to remote into a staff member’s Citrix session I click on a button labelled Shadow and get asked what I want to do with a file titled Invite.msrincident. This file sends a request to my staff asking if they give permission for me to see their screen. I can save the file and then open it and it will work, but it takes longer because I have to click on the three dots and then move the mouse again to click on Open.

My second reason is that if a staff member rings the IT number and no one picks up, they can leave a voice message. This gets saved as a file to a ticket. Waiting for the file to download before I can open it and then having to get rid of it afterwards is annoying.

so we can start download, close the browser and then possibly see the download progress in the Windows 10 action center and also get a notification when download is done

@Elliot Kirk wrote:

Back to topic

I often use 1, 2, but 3 is also very useful sometimes.
So I totally agree with 4.
Giving users the opportunity to choose is better than making decisions for them.
Of course, you will have the default options.

@Elliot Kirk

@ComputerCatThe current Chromium Edge allows you to click a file to open it before it is downloaded. This is faster than the old Edge/IE because the browser is not waiting on the user to choose Run/Open/Save. The old Open/Save both must first download the file before it can be opened.

Highlighted

I'm voting for Options 1 AND 2 (something like Option 4, but without 3).

I want to run files without saving them (I know, they have to be downloaded, but get deleted afterwards).
I want to save them in a folder I can choose individually for every download and to rename it the way I like.
I want to cancel a download before it starts (if I clicked the wrong link). So that makes buttons like:

RUN (without saving)
SAVE AS
CANCEL

Maybe there are a few users out there, that often use SAVE (with a given name and directly to the download folder). But if I choose to download something and store it for later usage, I want to choose name and location individually for every download by myself.

Tbh, just do this and we'll be happy!

Run = Open

there doesn't need to be 2 buttons that do exactly the same thing.

But, show "Run" when the file being downloaded is a .exe, and show "Open" for all other file types.

@HotCakeX To save 3 photos into the Pictures folder instead of the normal Downloads folder...

With classic Edge: total 12 clicks + additional folder navigation
Click link, click up arrow, click Save As, navigate to Pictures folder, click Save, then wait for download.
Repeat 3x

With proposed Move Downloads button: total 5 clicks + additional folder navigation
Click link, Repeat 3x
While downloads are still working or after completed, click Move Downloads, navigate to Pictures folder, click Save

For 10 photos,
40 clicks + additional navigation
vs
12 clicks + additional navigation

If your thought is now to save everything in Downloads and then move it, Chromium auto-download like Edge Dev has now still cuts the number of clicks in half, because you don't have to pick Save.

Edit: number of clicks above does not include folder navigation clicks, since that is variable depending on where you want to save and whether you saved there recently

Highlighted
There is no need to choose folder every time.
you shouldn't count the navigation, that's all wrong.

even if you wanna count navigation clicks, I suggested this to fix that

Okay,

anyway,

you said "To save 3 photos into the Pictures folder instead of the normal Downloads folder"

instead of choosing Photos folder 10 times for 10 photos. first download all 10 photos to the default downloads folder and then move them to the Photos folder.

OR,

Microsoft Edge insider needs to implements this:

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Discussions/Let-us-Choose-Download-Location-For-each-File-Typ...

to solve that issue.

Highlighted

@HotCakeXBut like I said earlier, " file type is not an accurate predictor of contents of the file (family photo and clip-art might both be .jpg files) "

Also, then you would have to keep track of previous folder/file type associations you made. (Did I want pdfs saved in Documents\Reports or under Documents\Manuals or under Downloads?)

I agree this could be a nice advanced feature to add for certain users, but I think the idea of moving all recently downloaded files from the downloads bar is a more flexible and simpler solution for what many of us are already doing: downloading stuff and then organizing it.

It puts the user in charge of where everything goes, they can change it every time, and they can put all files in the same place regardless of file type.

Highlighted
Those associations are saved in Edge insider settings so they can be synced.

what you're saying is also nice and can be already done

edge://settings/downloads

turn on "ask where to save the file"
Highlighted
That's not quite the same. That asks every single time where to save every single file. That's a lot more clicks and confirmations before any downloads start. It's unnecessary when downloading stuff for single use like installers, and slow and repetitive when downloading a bunch of things.

My idea is to default to saving in downloads, but provide a user-friendly way of organizing downloads by something other than file type. By moving important stuff right after downloading, and leaving all other junk and one-time use stuff in the downloads folder, you can enable an option to delete recently downloaded files after each session. This keeps your downloads folder clean, and encourages users to organize important stuff if they want to, or lets them leave everything in downloads if they don't want to change anything. This new feature set is something that is not in any major browser right now.
Highlighted
That's sounds good too, I think if this feature gets implemented, the "Run" button won't be needed anymore because Run relies on a temporary directory that gets emptied after using that downloaded file.
Highlighted
I just want to add that Dinosaur Tim's terminology of "Mark as temporary" solves part B of my proposal's issues. Personally, I'm pretty wary of automatic file deleting software. However, this pushes opening a file from two clicks in Classic (One click to begin dialog + one click on the "Open/Run" button) while it's 4 clicks in the new system. (Click to begin downloading + Click to open the options menu + click to mark as temporary + click to open/run). We could get this down to three clicks by calling it "Open as temporary file" or "Run as temporary app" instead. Obviously, when you're downloading something that will be deleted soon after, you'll want to open or run it right away.

As for part A, I think that if one of the files has been moved to a custom location before the user selects "move all", then Edge should NOT override that one file's special location. There are two ways this could be visually indicated. Edge could show relocated files on the left side of the downloads bar, putting a divider bar between them and the rest of the files. This is not ideal; it moves the file from under the mouse to a different part of the screen. A better way would be to show the icon of the file within a folder, and possibly tint the file's tile in the downloads bar a slightly different color.

@Elliot Kirk

As a Chrome user, here are my thoughts.

1. Chrome opens most pdf files in the internal pdf viewer (pdfium?) so they do not appear in my downloads folder. This means I rarely have this problem. When I do experience this problem, it usually occurs with Word and Excel files that I want to open but don't want a copy in my downloads folder.

2. I would like a way to choose the filename and location to save the downloaded file, but only for a subset of downloaded files (the ones I don't intend to delete soon after viewing). Because I only do this for some files, I would prefer to go to the downloads folder and change the name/location using File Explorer as opposed to being asked the name/location for every file I download.

3. Yes, I want a light-weight downloads process. Chrome is light-weight. You click on download and the file is in your download folder.

Highlighted
Highlighted

@WolfIcefangYes I forgot to include that in my mockup, but an "Open and Delete" button would work nicely right under the existing Open button on the options menu.

Seeing as the classic Edge Open button opened things once and then kept the file in a hard-to-find temporary cache, deleting the file when Edge was closed, I assume that enabling the proposed option to delete recent downloads on close will mimic this old behavior. With that option enabled, clicking the "Open and Delete" button is functionally no different than simply opening the file by clicking on the filename. The file gets deleted when the browser is closed in both cases, except this way the file is in a more intuitively accessible location, in case you want to click it twice or save it for some reason. Since they do the same thing, I expect people will use the "Open and Delete" button less and less, so the extra click to use it will have less and less consequence.

As far as representing moved files, I like your color and folder icon ideas. Another option might be a checkmark over the file icon (indicating done moving/organizing). And yes, the Move All button should only affect unmoved files still in the downloads folder.

Highlighted

The worst thing of the current download behavior (and one of the biggest reason why I hate Chrome) is the fact that you can't choose what need to happen when you click on a link to a file.

The browser always download the files in the same folder, or you need to always tell to the browser where to save the files.

But some times I'm ok if the file is downloaded in the Download folder, most of the time I need to change the download location, many other times I don't need to keep a copy of the file locally (for some installer for example, or some documents) and find really annoying to have to manually goto the Download folder and remove those files by hand.

So what I really really really need is a way to temporarily easily override the default behavior and switch between the option to save, save as or run/open the file that I have to download (or whatever option will be available.

Highlighted

@Elliot Kirk Provide us at least current Spartan Edge UI / Old good IE UI for saving/saving as files or just opening them without actual saving.

Highlighted

@i-am-kent, to your follow-up question on balancing speed (1-click) with power-flexibility that requires multiple clicks, for my part, I'd be fine if left click did a jump to  a "default" behavior that could be set in settings (I'd set to pop-up a save dialog to prompt me where to save, but this would allow others to have it save immediately with a single click), and right-click provided an menu with the full list of options.

To make this as easy as possible for users to optimize, I'd suggest that initially when a user clicks on a file link, it provides a pop-up window showing the options:

  • Save to default download location
  • Save as... to specify save location
  • Open/Run

And then let user select one as a default, where all remain available via right-click.

Highlighted

@DinosaurTim, for this record, I strongly disagree with eliminating the "Open" or "Run" options we've had in IE and classic Edge. However, to your point that it causes confusion, I do think your naming suggestions of something like "Run once" or "Open and delete" could help. I have no objection to that. I'd think for clarity with other terminology, it would probably be "Run/Open without saving."

But I really want to emphasize that lacking this ability is the biggest negative to me with the new Chromium Edge browser and the chief reason I go to another browser (classic Edge, in my case) so please, MS, don't let DinosaurTim's feedback discourage adding this.

Highlighted

@HotCakeX, I too would be happy if it worked as shown in your picture from Classic Edge. That's already just about perfect for me.

I do appreciate that some users would really benefit from the click-savings of the Chromium Edge for users who don't want that. Another option could be to add a checkbox "do this for all file downloads in this window" (or "...in this session").

But if I had to choose between saving the click or getting the flexibility, I would MUCH, MUCH, MUCH MORE prefer the flexible way it works in classic Edge over the new Chromium method, and specifically the Run/Open option being the most important distinction.

Highlighted

@Rich Lusk @Elliot Kirk I actually prefer the way that Classic Edge provides a banner across the bottom of the screen with buttons to choose which options are appropriate for you.

I have always disliked the way that Chromium browsers manage downloads because I like being able to decide what I want to do before the download starts, rather than it automatically downloading and then having to quickly click the ... OPTIONS button to decide if the file should open immediately.

Downloads are confusing after Classic EdgeDownloads are confusing after Classic Edge

(I am typing this from a Mac and so the Skype Windows Download isn't a sensible comparison, but this is purely for illustration!)

I think it would be sensible to make choices clear, but allow users the choice.  So much effort is going into the design of Chromium Edge I am sure whatever happens will be helpful.

@Elliot Kirk

Open / Run is a must for me. No matter what.

Second, everything you said about bulk downloads is not something I really seek in a browser.

I think it could be useful to let the user choose between:

- open/run: as in current edge

- save: to downloads

- save to recent location:  dropdown with MRU five download locations alternatives

- save as... : custom location and filename

Think to my daily workflow: every day I attend lessons of different courses and I need to download updated slides for each one, I'm used to put slides for each course in different folders, and (currently) every time I have to go with "save as..." selecting the right folder going back from the last one which was of a different course.

The MRU locations is what really speeds up downloading multiple files in my use case. Bulk download to the same folder is better addressed by proper download managers.

Highlighted

@Colin -  My main focus is on reducing the number of clicks needed to accomplish things and streamlining workflow. Old IE/Edge always asked what to do with stuff before downloading, waiting for me to choose, and not starting the download until I do.

It's not that I hate the Open button; I hate the pre-download prompt with the Open button. The only reason that prompt existed was to choose between Save, Save As, and Open. Considering that Save and Open both download a file first, I think they are technically redundant. If you disagree, I'd honestly like to know what unique purpose the Open button serves for you? If it is just temporary file deletion, I think that can be better handled by downloading first, then having an "Open (and Delete)" button.

Regarding the pre-download Save As... button, that can be also replaced with a post-download Move Downloads... button on the download bar, which streamlines organization of multiple downloads at once.

Highlighted

@Elliot Kirk

Personally, I like the banner at the bottom of IE/Classic Edge, but I love some of the other ideas.  One thing that would help is always opening a PDF file.  Sometimes it opens in another tab, but many times you get the prompt for download.  I don't necessarily want the website to determine what happens.  I want the PDF to open in a temporary location that will be cleared when I close the browser.  If I want or need to save/print the PDF, the viewer buttons are sufficient for that.

For exe or msi files, I would probably want a prompt because 90% of the time I want to run them on the computer I'm using, but 10% of the time I'm downloading them to save for later or run on another computer.  Otherwise, the right-click menu could be made better to handle files.  If I'm running it, delete the temporary file when the browser is closed.

Office files I would expect to just open in the program.  If you close it, Office will prompt to save or close without saving.

Like one person suggested, maybe a setup page to control what happens to the majority of file types.  Some people clicking on a picture might just want to view the picture in a modal, close and move on.  The modal could have options for save/print, etc.  As we see with the suggestions, each person is going to want their own flavor of something.

Maybe a good solution would be make better use of the right-click menu.  You could either turn on the IE banner in setting or use right-click with more/better options.  I know lots of options takes more coding time, but most people are going to want more options than fewer.
