Since the announcement of General Availability of Premium-series (SQL DB Hyperscale – Premium HW GA; SQL MI – Premium HW GA) the ability to purchase Reserved Instances for Premium HW tier for SQL Database Hyperscale and SQL Managed Instance has been one of the most frequent requests by our customers.
This is of no surprise, as Reserved Instances are one of the two most effective methods to optimize costs when migrating from on-premises and running your SQL Server as a PaaS service in the Cloud (the other powerful cost-savings method being Azure Hybrid Benefit for utilizing the existing SQL Server licenses).
Consequently, Premium-series & Memory Optimized Premium-series hardware have been the fastest growing offerings since their release, so all the current users will now also be able to further optimize their costs by using Reserved Instances.
Premium- and Memory Optimized Premium-series hardware for Azure SQL Database Hyperscale
Based on the latest generation of Intel® Xeon Scalable processors (3rd gen – “Ice Lake”) and AMD EPYC™ 7763v (“Milan”) chipsets, this Premium-series hardware offers significantly improved performance and scalability over the Standard-series (previously known as “Gen5”) hardware offerings and allows you to migrate your performance demanding workloads to Azure SQL Database Hyperscale. In addition, a new memory optimized option within the Premium-series provides more memory per vCore to meet the needs of your most memory-intensive workloads. At the moment, only 1-Year Reserved Instance (RI) option is available for Premium-series and Memory Optimized Premium-series Hyperscale, but 3-Year option will also be available in the coming months. Premium- and Memory Optimized Premium-series hardware for Azure SQL Managed Instance
Premium-series and Memory Optimized Premium-series hardware are based on Intel® Xeon Scalable processors (3rd gen - “Ice Lake”) and offer more storage and more memory per vCore compared to Standard-series, in order to address the most resource-intensive database workloads.
