Intune policy for device context

Currently, the Universal Print configuration profile in Intune only supports user-context printer installs. This means that we can only target user groups and not device groups. I work in higher education and we have many computer labs, each with their own printer. We need the printer to be installed automatically for every user that logs into the machines in the computer lab.

All of our users that log in to the machines are licensed for Universal Print. This request is to create an Intune policy to install the UP printer for all users of a particular device. I've seen the other post Support for SharedPC mode / Guest user regarding kiosk and guest users. I support and need that functionality as well but I believe this is a different request as the policy I am suggesting does not have to account for unlicensed users.

  • Thanks for the clarification. We'll investigate this and see what (if anything) can be done for this scenario.
For clarity, this is not on our backlog and no work for it is scheduled yet.

Ideally, there should be a way to target installs to certain devices AND to certain printers. A user should be able to access a printer on Shared Computer A, but then also have the printer on all their work-assigned devices.

Rani_Abdellatif Hi thanks for your reply. You are understanding my request correctly. Printer A should go to PCs in Lab A and Printer B should go to PCs in Lab B. If Sally logs into a PC in Lab A, she only sees Printer A. If she logs into a PC in Lab B, she only sees Printer B.

    Expectations about the user-based printers:

I would expect the user based printers to also be installed on every device the user logs into (in addition to device-targeted printers like Printer A in Lab A).

  • So currently printers are user-based and if I understand correctly you'd like to have a way to make them device-based.

To make sure I understand, let's assume you have 2 labs: labA and labB. LabA has printerA and LabB has printerB. Each lab has its own PCs.

You would like to use Intune to deploy printerA to PCs in labA and printerB to PCs in labB, so that any user who logs onto any labA PC will see only printerA, and if that same user then logs onto a PC in labB, they will see only printerB. Correct?

If so, what are your expectations about the user-based printers? If a user already has a printer that gets installed on every device they log onto, should that printer also appear when they log onto a PC in labA (in addition to printerA) or not?
