Windows + Intune Office Hours at Microsoft Technical Takeoff
Event details
We're wrapping up the Microsoft Technical Takeoff with answering any final questions you might have about managing the Windows devices used by remote, onsite, and hybrid workers across your organization, and keeping those devices up to date effectively! Get tips on rolling out Windows 11 across your organization! Learn how to cloud attach your on-premises workloads!
We will have a broad group of product experts, servicing experts, and engineers representing Windows, Microsoft Intune, Configuration Manager, security, public sector, FastTrack, and more. And, for your continued questions, join us every third Thursday for Windows Office Hours here on the Tech Community.
This session is part of the Microsoft Technical Takeoff: Windows + Intune. Add it to your calendar, RSVP for event reminders, and post your questions and comments below! This session will also be recorded and available on demand shortly after conclusion of the live event. |
- GaryBaerBrass ContributorThis week has been extremely helpful. In general, everything seems more accessible as a result of the community you created by hosting these sessions. Thanks for all your efforts to bring us behind the curtain! Look forward to the improvements coming...
- ZebulonSmithIron ContributorI'll second that. I left Ignite with more questions than answers. After this week, I have more answers and new ideas than I do time to act on them. A+ content from all of the presenters.
- RainerP250458Iron ContributorLike Zeb said: definitely an A+ score ... so many MSFT enthusiasts and SMEs in one (virtual) place ... VERY APPRECIATED and HELPFUL 🙂
- RainerP250458Iron ContributorHeather: you posted ".. bringing you more events like this in the future ..." YES PLEASE ! This week (event) was the "best ever" since more than 10 years 🙂 ... WAITING FOR MORE! :-)
- RyanDeyCopper ContributorNo question. I just wanted to thank you for a week of training that was infinitely more useful than Ignite.
- KurtBMayerSteel ContributorAn occasional Intune limitation versus SCCM has been with Win32 apps and MSIs when doing app packaging and deployments. After the apps are uploaded to the MS Endpoint Manager portal, you can't get the app content back readily (without digging though the management extension folder on the clients). For example, if the source files got lost that went into the .IntuneWin file, or if you wanted to export it for transfer elsewhere. It would be very nice if there was a link in the app's properties to re-download the package source content from the portal, along with the config of the app definition, such as detection rules and command line switches.
- GaryBaerBrass ContributorSame with Scripts... Once uploaded, you cannot see the content of the "Live" script (unless it's a PRS).
- RainerP250458Iron Contributorto get back your original .intunewin file contents, have a look here: https://saadkhamis.com/intunewinapputilgui/ Author says: I wrote IntuneWinAppUtilGUI, v0.5.0.0, to simplify using and executing IntuneWinAppUtil.exe and IntuneWinAppUtilDecoder.exe. It can be used to Pack files/folders into an .intunewin file and to extract original files/folders from an “.intunewin” file. I've tested that, works as expected :-) And to get back your PowerShell Scripts in Intune, use scripts here (from "Micke-K"): https://github.com/Micke-K/IntuneManagement
- dcruickshankBrass ContributorWith the Windows store for business replacement, winget-cli, I have two queries. 1) does installing an application using winget keep it up to date automatically? 2) how would we handle paid apps using winget?
- Max_SteinMicrosoft
Hi, David! We published guidance on leveraging Windows Package Manager for both public and private apps over on our blog here: Evolving the Microsoft Store for Business and Education.
- MupwoodCopper ContributorWhen can we get access to the Winget integration with Intune? I asked the Winget team and they said this was up to the Intune team.
- Max_SteinMicrosoft
Hi, Matthew! Check out our FAQ: Supporting Microsoft Store experiences on managed devices for the latest update on Microsoft Intune integration with the Microsoft Store on Windows. New capabilities will be available in the coming months, so stay tuned to: https://aka.ms/WindowsITPro for future updates!
- MupwoodCopper ContributorThank you!
- MupwoodCopper ContributorPlease don't skip over this question!!!!
- MupwoodCopper ContributorYou guys have answered questions from people that could have figured out from Googling their questions. Please answer this question! If this is something you can't talk about, just let us know. I don't like to be shown such a useful feature without an ETA of when it will actually come out.

I would love to have a OData feed for Endpoint Analytics like we already have for Intune.
- DanielRatliffBrass ContributorMuch of the slowness and performance issues with targeting are due to Azure AD limitations (ESP in Autopilot, dynamic group limitations, etc). Besides filters, are there any plans to improving Intune's capabilities by moving away from AAD's limitations?
- ZebulonSmithIron ContributorIs there a list of all of the aka.ms/TT/* links that were published throughout the week? Lots of good info there and it would be nice to have it all in one place.
- Heather_PoulsenCommunity ManagerI'll publish a full list of resources mentioned in this week's sessions on Monday! Just need to gather them all up!
- ZebulonSmithIron ContributorAwesome, thanks!

How about maintenance windows in Intune like we have in SCCM?
- ESJeffLBrass ContributorAria, thank you for that answer. The need for maintenance windows is to increase adoption and control deployments. We are a utility and we have 24x7 critical systems that need to be managed carefully so maint windows allows us to prevent installation and restart as needed, especially during storm events, when keeping the lights on is priority. Remember, Intune will be great if we can make it do what SCCM does:)
- Dave RandallMicrosoftAs Jason and Joe mentioned, it would be great to understand which scenarios and platforms you'd like to apply maintenance windows to. Software updates are common, but what others are important for your business?
- ESJeffLBrass Contributor
.
- Dave RandallMicrosoftAdditionally we have some software update scheduling options for macOS. It's not technically maintenance windows, but gives you more control over macOS software updates. Information here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/intune/protect/software-updates-macos
- treestryderSteel ContributorCould the Windows 365 sign-on directly from the Windows 11 logon screen be seen as Microsoft's answer to a thin client?
- ZebulonSmithIron ContributorShared PC Mode would be a great solution for this. It makes Windows behave very thin client-ey.
- treestryderSteel Contributor
We have many shared PCs (Shared PC Mode enabled and everything deployed per Device), labs (like the shared, but allows guest access to folks who for different reasons do not have AAD accounts) and various kiosks (nearly all run Edge as a single app, one has the navigation bar enabled for browsing like at a library).
Our need for thin clients could be thought of more like an always-on-VPN alternative. We need to be able to hand out cheap, yet secure, devices that are only useful for connecting to secured VDI environments. Both multi-user and some managed by a 3rd party in GCC.
