Event details

We are very excited to announce a Microsoft Teams ‘Ask Microsoft Anything’ (AMA) about the new VDI solution for Teams on Azure Virtual Desktops/Windows 365 environments.

The AMA will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. PT in the comment section below.

An AMA is a live online event similar to an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with members of the product engineering team who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

Why do you implement features without giving us the ability to change them. For example: All pasted chat images in Microsoft Teams are now cropped to 10:3 in preview. Why can I not disable this?
  • Where specifically will end users experience performance improvements with VDI 2.0?

Call Setup times are drastically reduced, new codecs are now available, Meeting conference servers are now selected based on proximity to the user (and not the VM, like in VDI 1.0), resource consumption on the endpoint is also reduced thanks to GPU leveraging, and dozens of new features!
  • Are there changes to the minimum hardware (or network?) requirements with VDI 2.0?
  • Will the recommended steps to troubleshoot issues with a user's meeting quality differ with VDI 2.0?
  • For an easier way to locate our Teams VDI 2.0 (SlimCore) documentation, be sure to Favorite/Bookmark: aka.ms/teamsvdi2
  • What new features can I use and what's planned for future to get this closer to local Teams?

Our whole strategy with VDI 2.0 is to align the user experience with the feature set that native Teams on Windows has - VDI is just another platform (like MAC, Web, Mobile, etc). By re-utilizing the same media engine that native Teams has, we expect the feature gap to be significantly reduced, and even future features should come day-1 to VDI. There will be features, however, that do require a rewrite to be VDI-ready (e.g. Townhalls/Live Events).

There are numerous implementation challenges with Teams V2. Such as, but not limited to: Teams AppX Package is not registered systemwide Teams Icon is missing when migrating from Teams Classic to Teams New Bug in FSLogix 2210 HF4 Search doesn't work for teams in the start menu Open with dialog starts after switching from Teams Classic to Teams New Teams Outlook Plugin not visible Can you address why there are so many issues trying to implement Teams V2 and where is the Quality Assurance on the updates that break things?
  • What steps do I have to follow to update my users to the new VDI solution for Teams?

For AVD and W365 customers, the update happens automatically if you meet the minimum requirements (24193.1805.3040.8975 and Windows App: 2.0.285.0 / Remote Desktop Client:1.2.5405.0). Once they launch Teams, the Remote Desktop client / Windows App will install automatically the new media engine (SlimCore) on the endpoint and the user will be upgraded to VDI 2.0 once they restart Teams.

What are the major project milestones to migrate from our current VDI solution to VDI 2.0? Are there any considerations for staging and testing VDI 2.0 prior to full rollout?
  • What is the new VDI solution for Teams, and how is it different from the old solution?

We have been optimizing Teams in VDI for a few years now - and to do that, we used a WebRTC media engine that was part of the Remote Desktop client. We call this VDI 1.0. VDI 2.0 is our next-gen architecture, relying on a new media engine called SlimCore that was carved out from the native Windows Teams client and made available as an MSIX package for VDI customers. VDI 2.0 is officially called the new VDI solution for Teams 🙂
