Microsoft Teams Sign Language View AMA

We are very excited to announce a Microsoft Teams ‘Ask Microsoft Anything’ (AMA) specific to the new Sign Language View in Microsoft Teams Meetings!
The AMA will take place on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. PT in the comment section below.
An AMA is a live online event similar to a “YamJam” on Yammer or an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit. This AMA gives you the opportunity to connect with members of the product engineering team who will be on hand to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

- GillespieDBrass ContributorIt appears to be automatic as long as your Teams users can access settings in Teams to enable the feature should they desire to use it. Keep a look out for the Accessibility tab in Settings. It might help if you ask colleagues to Quit (not sign out) and relaunch Teams as it may have downloaded as like other updates and many not be applied until the application the re-launched.

- GillespieDBrass ContributorI was thinking about this last night but it might depend on who started the recording. The sign language view is switched on sole for the person who requires it, so if they did the recording it is going to capture there view assuming they are using sign language view. Otherwise, if anyone else does the recording it will capture the usual dynamic feed of what is displayed on that persons screen. Time will tell. In situations like this I would set up a test call with someone who is using the feature and get them to record the call and repeat the process but this time get someone else to record the call and see how the recordings differ.

If myself and a second interpreter are working together and we are providing visual feeds (supporting each other with signs) would the Deaf person be able to see us both? 2. Will the interpreting selection be limited to two people? If we need a third team (Deaf or Hearing) or a student it would be necessary for us all to see each other. In the case of having a Deaf interpreter, it would be important to see them and not the Hearing team feeding them. Pinning is not always available, so will this be an added option for automated set up? On another note, We would also need to have the interpreter student and the professional interpreter on screen and be seen simultaneously by the Deaf participants. Is that an option? Other than pinning? 3. Can we have auto pinning for Deaf participants or Hearing interpreters that sign? It is important to be able to see everyone that will be signing in the meeting. We have noticed that once a meeting reaches a certain capacity functionality like pinning is taken away, So having this automated option would be nice.

Hi Marlena, thank you for the detailed feedback! I'll take your questions in order: 1. Yes - the three of you (two interpreters and Deaf client) would all designate one another as signers, and then you would each see the other two prioritized for sign. 2. Currently just the first two pre-designated signers that turn on their video in a meeting will show. Everybody in the meeting can designate different signers, if they so choose. It would be great to understand this use case further - if you could share through the Feedback option in Teams that would be ideal. 3. If you've designated someone as a signer in your Accessibility settings, they will automatically be prioritized for sign language when you join a call together. There shouldn't be any limitations on when you can use sign language view.- JenniferEzellCopper ContributorHello Elizabeth - I work with Marlena. In your message you recommended that she "share through the Feedback option in Teams." Unfortunately, feedback policies are not available in GCC so the option is not available to her. Nor are we able to use the Feedback Hub. Do you have another way for her to share the information for this use case? Thank you
- getdennisCopper ContributorNot only that, but there are different types of interpreters - I have had meetings where I need a team of ASL interpreters, then a team of interpreters for people with vision difficulties (deaf-blind), and even another set of BSL interpreters because American sign language isn't the same as British sign language and I've got an international team. It's an added burden to each deaf person to have to play video screen musical chairs every time there's an interpreter switch. When I only want to see the ASL interpreter(s), I only need the 1 interpreter actively signing, and when they switch, I should automatically see the other ASL interpreter(s). I wouldn't need the BSL or tactile/low vision interpreters. This is especially painful when the deaf/blind people have to frantically search through a lot of videos to find the right interpreter with limited sight. And it shouldn't be up to the meeting host to manage, either, because 99% of the time the host won't be someone knowledgeable about accessibility.

Can more than one signer can be pinned simultaneously?

- getdennisCopper Contributor"Sign Language View" seems to be limited in benefit to those who need 1 or 2 sign language interpreters. When I host meetings with virtual participants, many but not all who sign, is there a way to leverage the sign language view to enlarge or prioritize those who are signers (but not necessarily sign language interpreters!) who are signing for themselves? I have sign language interpreters who will voice for them but the default video windows when many participants are on reduces the signing participants to small, difficult to see windows. Basically, I'm looking for a way to make the video not rely on an audio cue to focus the view on someone signing for themselves. Something like an "unmute to talk" button that recognizes someone is now signing to talk?

- YangOngBrass ContributorFeedback - I'm curious if it would be helpful for MS to post a general guide for users, like Info button, that tells them how to use accessible features. I think this applies to most organizations where the presenter/organizer spends the first 5 mins sharing how to use the accessible features & etc. It would be helpful to have an MS standard or a link to the custom messaging.
- PriyeshSE1Brass ContributorQuite a lot of our meeting/event organisers report that Zoom currently works much better for those needing BSL interpretation – it allows both sign language user and interpreters to be pinned simultaneously - is that going to be possible with the new updates?
- reneviscoBrass ContributorHi, you can "pin" any user and SL views manually in Teams video chat windows. I tend to pin all the participants' windows if less than 10.

The photo above shows multiple sign interpreters, but they are both shown equally. I was wondering if it would be possible for people to prioritise a single sign language interpreter as viewers are likely to only need one language. Our company is global and some geographies have many local sign languages, so we may have several and this would not be feasible to show them all. Thank you very much!

Hi Emma, each individual participant can designate their own list of interpreters they'd like to see within the Accessibility Settings pane. Within a meeting, the first two of those interpreters to turn on their video will appear. If there's an interpreter showing that the participant doesn't want to see, they can always use the context menu on that interpreter's video to remove them as signer. - EmmaLHBrass ContributorIn addition to this, would it be possible to tag different interpreters with which language they are signing in, so that anyone joining the call knows immediately which interpreter is the one they need.
