The Store of the future
Event details
Learn how the Store of the future combines with the Windows Package Manager to enhance access to the Microsoft Store app catalog. Learn how you can search, discovery, deploy and manage Microsoft Store apps from within Intune, and with the Windows Package Manager.
Editor's note: The retirement of the Microsoft Store for Business and the Microsoft Store for Education, originally scheduled for March 31, 2023, has been postponed. For the latest information on the Microsoft Store, read Update to Intune integration with the Microsoft Store on Windows.

- Ryan GrimmBrass ContributorHow will Win32 apps from the new Store be handled in Autopilot scenarios? Are they considered Win32 AP-optimized or Store apps?
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
The IME handles installation of Win32 apps and apps using the new integration so from an Autopilot perspective, there should be no difference. - Paul_WoodwardIron ContributorI guess for now you can package your own .ps1 script as Win32 App and have it ensure the required modules are installed, the gallery is trusted, etc, and then execute the required WinGet cli commands. That's what I'm trialling right now. For updates, we can do similar, probably use PS App Deploy Toolkit to make sure blocking apps are not running, and issue required winget upgrade commands. Or possibly, scheduled task to run "winget upgrade" after login, maybe.
- Greg_C_GilbertIron ContributorGreat point. Right now the guidance is to not mix app install types in ESP. Hopefully win32 and winget store apps will work together in ESP.
- LeonShapiroCopper ContributorWill there be support for paid Store apps? Currently this has been a big pain point with the Windows Store for Business.

Purchasing apps from the Store for Business was a wonderful feature and it is a shame it wasn't loved more.
Whenever I hear of folks making decisions based solely on usage metrics, I think of speed limit and stop signs... take 'em down, no one uses them.
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
As a quick precursor here, this response is going to be slightly snarky. With respect to stop signs and speed limits, those are about safety and security and paid for by your (and my) tax dollars/euros/currency of choice. If you are suggesting that we increase everyone's Windows licensing costs to support a relatively unused service, then perhaps there's some discussion to be had. I don't think this is something customers would truly want but instead would want us to build a service and integration that folks can take better advantage of, meets their needs and requirements (usage telemetry and metrics are a direct reflection of this), is simpler and more flexible, and doesn't increase their costs.

> Currently this has been a big pain point with the Windows Store for Business. For which apps? Usage for paid subscription apps from the Store for Business was so extremely low that it was almost non-existant. Additionally, this was eliminated nearly 18 months ago from the Store for Business and thus is unrelated to our full retirement of the Store for Business. - Roy_MacLachlan

The Microsoft Store has removed support for paid apps.

Will Intune automatically update Windows Store apps deployed in this fashion? Both first- and third-party apps? And if so, can we control that update functionality for apps that customers may want to validate before rolling updates out?- mandarchenBrass ContributorMore granular app update controls are on the roadmap.
- Rob de RoosIron Contributor
I hoped to see the application update experience from Intune. Missed that one in this short session. Overall exited for what is there already.
- mandarchenBrass ContributorMore granular app update controls are on the roadmap.
- Ali11CHIron ContributorIs there a time frame when the Microsoft Store Repository will be rolled out to Tenants. Will it get pushed to Dev Tenants?
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
There's no such concept as a "dev tenant" from a service perpective (at leasst not for customer use); all Intune tenants are treated equally by the service. - Joe_Lurie
Microsoft
Once this is out of Private Preview, ideally later this calendar year, it'll be rolled out to all Intune tenants.
- saarjaCopper ContributorI cant see this Microsoft Store repository at app type ?
- mandarchenBrass ContributorThis feature is currently in private preview. Once we release the feature publicly, you will be able to see it.
- Tyler KlobassaBrass ContributorWhat is the timeline for GA?
- LeonShapiroCopper ContributorHow is export compliance for application handled with winget?

Microsoft
Can you provide some more details on your ask, I'm not sure I understand your question.- LeonShapiroCopper ContributorSome applications are not allowed to be installed in all countries we do business. Does winget or the Store of the future have mechanism to automatically limit deployments to allowed countries?
- swolfersbergerCopper ContributorWhen will Microsoft be publishing a guide of how to get from WSfB to this? What will happen to the apps that I currently have deployed with WSfB when it goes away?
- Jason_Sandys
Microsoft
To directly answer the questions here: > When will Microsoft be publishing a guide of how to get from WSfB to this? When we get to GA of the Intune integration, we'll certainly publish more information, however, the bottom line is that there's not much to do ultimately (assuming you are already using Intune to manage your WIndows Endpoints). You will need to recreate your applications for Microsoft Store apps using the new Store Rerpository application type and assign them as appropriate. Existing Store for Business and Education applications created in Intune will cease to function (and be disabled I believe). End users will also cease to see the private store tab in the Microsoft Store app and will need to begin using Comapny Portal for the apps you've moved to the new application type in Intune. > What will happen to the apps that I currently have deployed with WSfB when it goes away? Nothing. Apps are deployed from the Microsoft Store and that is not going away. The Store for Business and Education was just a curation mechanism; these going away do not change the actual source of the apps being from the Microsoft Store itself. - Joe_Lurie
