Thanks for joining today’s session on “Best practices for Windows Autopilot and device preparation” at Microsoft Technical Takeoff. Q&A will remain open through Friday so keep your comments and questions coming! Up next: Intune data platform and Advanced Analytics
Here are the resources we mentioned in today’s session:
- Windows Autopilot scenarios and capabilities
- For more policies that could cause issues during Autopilot, review: What are some of the known policies that conflict with Windows Autopilot?

Is there a particular RBAC permission that allows users to edit Autopilot device registrations? The role I currently have only allows users to read, but not do anything else.

hmm, so DP skips whole user-part ESP standard AP has?

Only device based configurations are delivered during OOBE phase.

Will there be a way to track the progress of powershell scripts during the script phase in the prep flow?

The User ESP was approaching 100% failure in my organization with no "smoking gun" of a blocking app or setting after months of troubleshooting. We eventually just disabled User ESP, and online forums indicate that our situation is not uncommon. Do you have any plans to improve the reliability of the User ESP?
- arpitsinha
Microsoft
User ESP errors can be tracked using Registries and other Logs of Autopilot.

This is what I did at my org as well...quite disappointing...

When uploading the Windows Autopilot hardware hash myself, is there a way to supply a value for the purchase order field? I have not checked recently, but I have never seen a way to do it. If not, consider this a request to make that capability available!
- Max_Stein
Microsoft
Hi Jay Michaud, thanks for the question! The 'PurchaseOrderId' value is typically generated by your CSP or OEM, who can obtain your authorization to register Windows Autopilot devices on your behalf: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/autopilot/registration-auth.
If you're looking at leveraging custom fields, the 'OrderId' group tag might be something of interest. Learn more in our docs here: https://learn.microsoft.com/autopilot/add-devices#ensure-that-the-csv-file-meets-requirements & https://learn.microsoft.com/autopilot/enrollment-autopilot#create-an-autopilot-device-group-using-intune . Hope this helps!

Hi Max_Stein,
Thank you for the response, but you answered a question I didn't ask. I am well aware that the PurchaseOrderId field is populated by vendors. I am specifically asking about whether there is a way that I, as the customer, can populate that field when uploading the hardware hash myself, long after the device was acquired without Windows Autopilot as part of the purchase. The documentation you linked does not mention the PurchaseOrderId field.

All - before you jump in to the shiny Device Preparation I would recommend check "Known Issues" list. I bumped into Bitlocker key length limitation issue (DP has known issue with 256-bit keys).

Great tip, thanks for sharing AlexandreI1340! Here's the link as well in case anyone needs it: https://learn.microsoft.com/autopilot/known-issues

The Windows Autopilot device preparation FAQ says "The pre-provisioning mode and self-deploying mode scenarios will be supported in the future, but aren't part of the initial release."
Do you have an ETA for these features? We really have a need for pre-provisioning and we're moving forward with Autopilot device prep as it seems that's where Microsoft is focusing future development.- Cristina_Osorio
Microsoft
Hi dcoffrin_gmp, we do not have an ETA to share at this point

Will there be a supported migration path in the future if one should decice to move from Autopilot to Autopilot device preparation?
- SaneshVig
Microsoft
As of today both Autopilot and Autopilot device preparation continue to be independent of each other and currently no plans to enable migration amongst them.
