Word does not scale correctly in explorer preview pane

One of our client's users is having an issue with his preview pane and word documents. Sometimes the preview shows the full first page of the document as expected and sometimes it only shows what looks like a zoomed in version of the document. Oddly enough, if you try to highlight the text in the document preview pane you still have to click where the text should be for it to highlight where the text is visible almost like the visible layer and the interactive layer don't line up.
