Word changed my bullet points into automatic numbering

Can someone help me here? I used the dash - bullet point - open circle - square bullet point system in my document. I opened it and Word had replaced every bullet point with automatic numbering. I have over 60 pages of detailed notes, and this is extremely frustrating because I'll get basically random numbering into the 40's for points that don't relate. How do I convert them back to how it was before?
