Unable to open Word for Mac 16.50.

Paid and downloaded last week and I cannot open the app. I get an error message that reads 

"There was a problem with Microsoft Word and your recent work might be lost. We pologize for the inconvenience." I check the Restart button and get the same message ad infinitum. I've thrown out and reinstalled the program ,and tried to start after quitting all other open applications, to no avail. I don't know what to do.

The installer says it is Word 16.50 and running MacOS Catalina 10.15.7.

I can't get into the program and I don't know what to do. $140 down the drain?!?
