Track changes by author doesn't work
Thanks for the follow-up. If you and your husband are sharing the same account, then you are treated as one and the same user by the Track Changes feature. Of course, if you click the "Always use these values..." option and specify different user names in the Word Options dialog box, you should be recognized as separate reviewers/editors.
Thanks again but this change didn’t work either. My husband uses a laptop and I use a desktop. We each have/use our own user name, and we both clicked on “Always use these values.” But our edits are still the same color. Now I’m thinking we should unclick “Always use these values” just to see what happens? Or maybe one of us shd click "Always use" and the other shd unclick "Always use" and then reverse who did what.

yes, it's really odd that By Author just started working on its own. Maybe one of the Microsoft updates? Anyway, thank you so much for all your help!

Well, I'm glad that Track Changes is now working as expected.
It would have been even better to find out exactly what caused the issue in the first place, of course.

I don't know why, but today By Author is working!! Husband's same laptop, my same desktop, same checked "Always use these values" -- but for some reason a document is showing new edits in different colors!!! I am baffled, but so grateful that you have stuck with this for all this time. Thank you so much. And I do hope this By Author functioning is permanent!

The problem, at least in the sample document, is that only one user/reviewer is registered in the sample document. Based on the new information you provided, that shouldn't happen.
Are you seeing this in just a few documents or in any document that you create and collaborate on?
You could try clearing the "Always use these values ..." option and see if the document correctly registers your Office user accounts. The assumption here is that you are in fact signed in with different accounts in your Office programs.
