Style Templates
(ignoring last two lines)
Changing the styles in your template will not change them in an existing document unless they are re-applied. See:
- What is the relationship between a Microsoft Word document and its template?
- but also see What happens when I send my document to someone else? Will Word mess up my formatting?
I am not on a Mac so cannot give you exact directions but you can set your document to update its styles from the template. See the second linked article for why you want to uncheck this option once it has done what you need. You need to access the Templates and Add-Ins dialog to get to this option. In the Windows version you can access this on the Developer Tab using either the Document Template button or the Word Add-Ins button. On the Mac, try the Word Add-Ins button.
You can also use the Organizer to copy styles from one document or template to another. That link is to a section in my page: Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word.
If this does not help, please provide more details. Although it is for a different forum, the following article may help you in doing so: How to Ask Questions In this Forum (to get the best and quickest answers) Definitely include information about exactly which OS and Word versions are being used; "uptodate" doesn't tell us that.
I suspect that the following article may be more than you need:

You can likely do what you want with the Modify Style dialog.
