Shift key acting up.
OK, that is the Desktop application. It could be Microsoft 365, Office 2016, Office 2019, or Office 2021 in any update. They all place Winword.exe in that location. Take a look at File > Account > About Word for more on which version and update you are using.

Can you tell what a Luddite I am? Thank you so much for your time and patience.Microsoft has gone out of its way to make this confusing. 2309 would be the latest release on the monthly channel. I monitor a number of Word help forums and have not seen this problem in the past. If it were a Word problem, I expect I would be seeing more people with the problem. That it happens in safe mode for Word tells me that the problem is not a Word add-In nor something in your Normal template.

Does this problem happen with other applications such as in your browser or WordPad or NotePad?
- Pretty much all my typing is in Word. Don't use WordPad or NotePad, but I will experiment with those. Has not occurred when typing emails, but perhaps they're not long enough for it to occur. Interestingly, it has stopped jumping to last search item and now only jumps to top of page.
