Thanks again for the reply. Is there a way to quickly convert 140 documents?
From what I have read elsewhere, the update is not reversible, so I will have to get on with it and put up with the time cost and inconvenience. Moving forwards, I will create the forms into templates. And they call it updates or progress 🙂

LumpyCBR1137XX As I mentioned, there is no need to convert the documents to templates (*.dotx) as with current versions of Word, when a *.docx document is located in one of the Templates folder, it behaves in the same way as a *.dotx file when File>New is used and a *.docx file is selected to be the basis of a new document. Using File>New does not open the *.docx file. Rather, it replicates the *.docx file as a new document which will initially appear as Document# it the title bar in the same way as when you create a new blank document.
