purchased MS word for mac, won't open

I just added MS Word on my Mac.  When I open it I just get "What's new in Word" and when I close that screen the program closes.  At the top toolbar most of the functions including new document, etc are grayed out.  How do I get rid of "What's new" and start using the program?
