Problem with removing { XE } code
I've been editing an index using Search and Replace. Somehow the word I was working on, let's say 'cat' now appears as cat{ XE } with nothing else between the brackets. 'cat' now appears in the index hundreds of times (pages of entries). I try to remove the { XE } with search and replace but it does not work. How can I search for this string in Search and Replace to that I can knock it out in one batch without all the { XE } with other content being knocked out too (e.g. dog{ XE "dog" }?
You have to display hidden text to see all the XE fields in Word. cat^d will only work in the "Find what" box in the Find & Replace dialog box, if the XE field is immediately preceded by the word cat. Maybe what you have is really the word cat, then a space, and then the XE field, in which case you should use: cat ^d instead.
Display nonprinting marks, for example by clicking the ¶ icon on the Home tab, to find out more what you are dealing with in the document. See the screen shot below for a simple example.
I had done some batch manipulations of index entries within the text, but then discovered I was left with { XE } multiple times within the text, and this seemed to be upsetting the index. I wanted to remove it, but could not. Your suggestion of seqrching for cat^d brought up nothing, so I wonder could you guide me further in this ... may be it was that I had already moved the { XE } entries manually.
Another problem I have is that my eliminate text to the left is not working with highlighted text. I have gto use ctr + x for that. Is there a toggle I need to turn off or on?

Conall_OCuinn Is there some text that appears to the left of the { XE } rather than cat{ XE } that you used as an example.
It may be best if you upload a copy of the document so that we can see what you really have in it.
