problem saving pagination formatting in Word
My problem is that the formatting I am doing on the pagination of a document is not saving. I format the pagination (in the footer), save it, close the doc, and when I open it again, the formatting has returned to what it was before I made the changes. I've done this several times now: make the pagination formatting changes I want, save it, close the doc, open it again, and the changes are gone. (Any other changes in the doc I make are saving fine.)
Background context, in case it's helpful: It's a 308-page book manuscript, with chapters. I broke the doc into sections, in order to have the footnote numbering begin again at 1 with each new chapter. I'm a full-time book editor, so this is something I do all the time. When I did it to this file, though, the pagination suddenly began again at 1 at the start of each new chapter (the new sections I created in the doc); that has not happened in the past. Ok, so I fixed the problem by going to the first page of each chapter, double-clicking on the page number, clicking on PAGE NUMBER in the top bar, then FORMAT PAGE NUMBERS in the drop-down list, and choosing CONTINUE FROM PREVIOUS SECTION. By doing this at the beginning of each chapter, I ended up with what I wanted: a doc that's paginated 1 through 308. But that fix is what's NOT SAVING when I close the document.

It should save. I have suggestions and reference to some resources.
Quick answer:
Use my free Continuous Page Numbering Add-In or the macro therein to set the numbering in the entire document as continuous. Then go to the start of each chapter and use the Format Page Numbers dialog to have that chapter start at 1.
Longer answer:
Many of the controls on the Page Layout Tab automatically insert one or two section breaks. Each new section inherits many of the settings from the section in which it is created, including the setting to restart numbering. What gets carried over when you start a new section?
You can go to each page that restarts numbering that should not and use the Format Page Numbers dialog to tell Word to continue from previous.

Gratuitous advice: Do not restart page numbering for each chapter. That formatted page number is what will show up in any Index and your Table of Contents. See Word MVP John McGhie's remarks in his page: I want to include the chapter number with the page number in the Header - how can I do this?
