Partial Heading text to show up as cross-reference
Hi,
I have set up heading accordingly using styles for TOC, e.g.
Note 1 ABC
Note 2 EFG
Note 3 XQY
In my body text in other pages, I need to write a sentence like " xxxxx (see note 1 and 3)."
For 1 and 3 in the above sentence, I wish to be able to set a cross reference to Note 1 ABC and Note 3 XQY.
But if I insert it as headings, it will appear as "see note Note 1 ABC and Note 3 XQY".
I don't want to just set a link because the note numbering might change if we move it to other positions in the document. I need the sentence to auto- update the change in number when I update all fields in the document.
How can I set it such that it will only show up only the "number" of the heading and still provide a hyperlink to go to the page when I convert the document into Pdf?
How about this:
- Place your cursor where you want the reference (e.g., after “see note”).
- Go to the References tab in the Ribbon.
- Click Cross-reference.
- In the dialog box:
- Reference type: Select Heading.
- Insert reference to: Choose Heading number or Heading number (no context).
- For which heading: Select the heading you want (e.g., “Note 1 ABC”).
- Insert as hyperlink: Make sure this box is checked.
- Click Insert.
- Repeat for each note number you want to reference.

Thank you! I played around a bit and realise that I have forgotten to set numbering format in the heading. Once I set it right, I will get the correct heading number in the cross reference!
