Paragraph Template Update Change Text Format

Microsoft Word - Version 2312

A template was created to number paragraphs 5 levels deep. The template works well. The paragraph may carry formatting, i.e. Bold text, either the entire line is bolded or just words within the paragraph.

The issue: When the text is repositioned and the Style is "Updated to Match Selection" command is selected, all of the paragraph positions are repositioned, the bolding in some lines may disappear, or bolding will be added to some paragraphs! This is a painful, tedious and expensive problem to fix in a 60 page document.

Has anyone experienced this same sort of phenomenon and successfully corrected it? Is it a software issue.

Please advise - Norm

    Hi Norm,

You need a basic understanding of both how styles work and how bold formatting works.

The bold formatting setting is a toggle applied to text. It is possible for it to be applied to multiple layers and toggles back and forth.

Font formatting in paragraph styles will be applied to the entire paragraph but will not change the font formatting of text in the paragraph so long as that formatting is on less than half the paragraph.

You can use the Reveal Formatting Pane, with the box checked to show style settings on your text to get a better idea of what is going on. Shift+F1
