Page numbers starting from page 7

I have a document that has an extensive index (which goes for six pages). I want to start page 1 on what Word considers page 7.

I can see how I can start page 2 as page 1, but nowhere can I find out how to make page 7 start as page 1.

Can anyone help?

See Numbering (or not numbering) Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP.

Page numbering is handled by Word by fields in headers and/or footers. These are components of sections. You can restart page numbering at the beginning of a new section using the Format Page Numbers dialog. Here is my exposition on page numbering but I think Suzanne's article will be all you need.

In common Word jargon, I think you are referring to a Table of Contents rather than to an Index. One is generally a sequential list of headings at the start of a document or part while the Index is an alphabetical list by topic, generally at the end of a document.

Thanks for all your help. I have got it fixed.
Unfortunately I couldn't access the Suzanne Barnhill post. For some reason it was blocked by my work firewall.
Using your exposition page I did end up working it out. I added a section break in the page where I wanted to start the numbers, and it seems to have started them there.

I'm glad I was able to help.

Suzanne's pages are http rather that https. This is not unusual in personal sites
