See Numbering Front Matter by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP .
That may be all you need.
Resources:
- Page Numbers in Word 2007-2021 (365)
- Continuous Page Numbering Add-In (should not need)
- Deleting “Blank” Pages by Suzanne Barnhill, MVP
- Working with sections by Dave Rado, MVP
- Header/Footer Settings Recap
- Toolkit for Advanced Management of Headers and Footers (probably won't need)
Background:
- Page numbers in Word are fields. They are not numbers that you type.
- They are placed in footers (or sometimes headers).
- Headers and footers are parts of Word sections and every section has three header parts and three footer parts, which may or may not be used depending on the options set. Each of these parts is independent of the others. (see recap for less confusion and more information)
- When a new section is started, by default, each of these parts is linked or connected to the same kind of part in the preceding section. They can each be linked or unlinked from that part. If linked, the same part operated in both sections. What gets carried over when you start a new section?
