Microsoft word

I have an old version of word 12.3.5 on my older Mac 2009, operating system OS X El Captain. Without having to buy a newer Mac what version of microsoft word can I update to? Or is it better to subscribe to microsoft 365?

I'm writing a novel and word seems best for this.

    You can subscribe to Microsoft 365. You have a chance to do a trial to check your system's  compatibility.
