List Formatting No Longer Working
It doesn't need to be as complicated as all this, but thanks for your article which reminded me of the bit I was missing.
I usually create multi-level headings using the Style editor etc, but the thing I forget is that when you click on Define New MultiLevel List dialog, the window opens with a side-panel closed and it isn't easy to see this is the case. We are looking for the field to link level to style but to see it, you first need to click the More >> button on the bottom left.
Then you can easily see in the preview pane if level 1 is linked to Heading 1, and level 2 is linked to Heading 2, then the multi-level numbering will reset for each level.
In my opinion it would be helpful if Word designers opened this pop-up window with More displayed as a default, or even removed the option for Less or More.
Setting up multilevel numbering is convoluted in Word, if you want to ensure that it is stable and predictable. Microsoft really should improve the user interface.
