How to offset the position of a multilevel list number to the top left?

I would like to replicate a chapter title heading style in a thesis that I am writing that is similar to a document written in "LaTeX" that looks like so:

I want to create a multilevel list with the top level heading having a style like the one in the screenshot (where the list number is floating to the top left with light gray background) and the rest of the list if in the 1.1, 1.1.1, etc.

Can this be done in word?

tails115 Yes. This can be done in Microsoft Word. When you define Multilevel List numbering, go to "Font", and click "Advanced" tab, Change the Position to "Raised" and increase the points to raise as per your requirements.

Getting the number to be split over the (paragraph) shading will take more, though.

Charles_Kenyon You are right. But I am not sure if it's also the requirement for this user. Still I tried, and I don't see any native option with my limited knowledge. I would put a grey box with "Behind Text" wrapping and "Move with text." as a work around for this.
