"Heading" and "Body" fonts are sometimes incorrectly displaying as Times New Roman
So on Friday I was on a screen share with someone who was having this issue. Same as before, with styles defined as "+Body", Body defined as Aptos, but the text showing up in the font dialog as "Times New Roman (Body)" which is obviously incorrect. Well, it correctly showed that it was displaying as Times New Roman however that definitely wasn't the Body font.
As a test we tried picking some other font schemes, but the text continued to display as TNR.
Finally I thought we should try clearing the cache, so went to Options > Save, checked the tick box to remove cached files when Word closes (which really should be on by default, it causes no end of trouble when you're working with SharePoint!) and also clicked the button to delete all cached files. Once that was completed we closed Word, and upon re-opening all displayed OK.
Whether this has fixed it completely I can't say, but writing that up here in case it helps anyone.
Make sure that on the Templates and Add-ins dialog (Developer Tab>Document Template) that the box for "Automatically update document styles" is NOT CHECKED.
Thanks Doug, I don't think this is it because the doc is linked to the correct template in any case? And no template (even Normal) has TNR as the default font: it would either be Aptos or Calibri for older ones. I've also never seen this before, it's only happened in the last couple of weeks and I'm hearing it from multiple people around the country.
Even though the document is linked to a template with the correct name, that does not mean that the template on the host machine is identical to the "correct" template and, if the "Automatically update document styles" box is checked (which it normally should not be), the style definitions of the template on the host machine will be used for the document.
If you place the cursor in text that is not in the expected font and then press CTRL+SHIFT+S, what does the Apply Styles dialog show as the style that is in use for the selected text?
If you click on the Modify button, what is the font setting for that style?
In this case the documents link back to a .dotm in SharePoint so it's a case where there is a single source of truth (or at least a single source of truth for that particular project, there are multiple). It's happening with multiple templates. Nothing we are working on uses Times (serif is so last century!)
The thing is that I was doing a screen share with someone and I could see their document was in TNR, but for me it appeared fine. Once they closed Word, it opened ok for them.
I don't have one that's doing it at the moment, but for them the document showed the font as being "Times new Roman (Body)" even though in the theme "Body" was set as Aptos. The definition of the style had font as "+Body". For me it was all correct.
