Formatting a split heading
Hello everyone.
I'm finishing off a book I've spent the last 3 years researching and I'm now formatting it before I send it off to the publisher.
A solution for this has bent my brain for way too long. I've been unable to find a way to accomplish my aims, so I turn to you, the Brains Trust.
I need Heading 1 to be split as per the following screencap, with the auto-generated chapter number appearing on a different line to the chapter title, as per the following figure. (I'd rather not have the period after the chapter number, but please don't let that take you down a rabbit hole).
Hyphenation is set to Automatic, but I want chapter titles to remain unhyphenated. In the above example, I had to add a CR (ctrl+enter) to avoid hyphenation.
Nevertheless, I want both the chapter number and the chapter title to appear on the same line in the TOC, as shown below.
...and also in the header of odd-numbered pages, as shown below. (I have already formatted for different pages).
In the below example, I've used a table for the header, but I'll hide the lines prior to sending it off to the publisher. As you can see, though, having the chapter number and title on the same line works fine in the TOC, but the CR takes up space above the chapter title in the header. Not a good look. I want to get rid of that CR in the header and I certainly don't want the chapter number in there either.
I'm sure you can see what I'm aiming for. If not, then please ask follow-up questions.
How can I accomplish my goals here? If my approach wrong, I'd really appreciate in learning a better way?
Thanks so much for any help you might be able to offer.
Many thanks,
Graham R Seach

Thanks JennyT2070 . I had left a reply you, but it's disappeared now. I think maybe when a moderator removed your duplicate post, they also removed my reply. Nevertheless...
The TOC is already the way I want it, and I want to stay with the Style approach, even if it's not the most elegant way of doing it. My problem is eliminating the CR that's displayed in the page header.
As I said in my original post, "I want to get rid of that CR in the header and I certainly don't want the chapter number in there either."

You have to use "TC Fields" to customize the text you wish to appear in Table of Content.
TC fields is in the hidden ribbon References that you need to unhide.
There are a few links if you google on using TC fields to create table of content.

what I found is using TC fields, means the text is very manual. If you change your mind about the description on the body text, you need to make sure you edit the tc field as well.

I have tried 4 times to leave a reply, but each time it indicates success, but it never gets published.
I haven't had a chance to test your idea, but I intend to. I just didn't want you to think I'd abandoned the thread.
