Figure Reference different font color from body of text
Whenever I insert a reference for a figure in my document, it is a gray font color. The style it's set to is normal body text, which is black like the text around it. I've tried searching through font styles to see if there's a reference or hyperlink that looks like it, and there is not. Any tips on how to specifically change the format for an in text reference?

Looking at your picture, I do not see a difference.
Cross-references in Word are fields. You may have the option for field shading set to always, in which case they would have a gray background.
If you would like, you could save a sample document with the problem on OneDrive or DropBox and post a link to it here so we could look at it (in addition to your screenshot).
Why a sample file is important for troubleshooting - - - - - - - and how to do it.
