Editing the disposition of footnotes

When I insert a footnote, MSWord makes a line under my text. Under the text there is some empty space (an empty paragraph) before the footnote appears. That space is too big! How can I change it?

The paragraph mark may be part of the footnote separator. To find out, you will have to access the footnotes pane. If you have Word for Windows, switch to Draft view (on the View tab, click Draft). Go to the References tab and click Show Notes (in the Footnotes group).

In the footnotes pane, click the drop down and choose Footnote Separator. You should see something similar to what is depicted in the screen shot below. Display nonprinting characters by clicking the ¶ icon on the Home tab.

If the footnote separator contains excessive paragraph marks (¶), you can delete them. If the Line Spacing or Spacing Before/After has changed, you can change it back using the Paragraph dialog box.
