Chapters
. . . . so I want to create some Chapters, so that I can create a "List of Contents"
So I found this WebSite
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-to-number-chapters-appendixes-and-pages-in-documents-that-contain-both-chapter-and-appendix-headings-in-word-2d9a939c-2863-45c3-bf5e-74b32972035d
where I am told -
.----------------------
On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, and then click the Outline Numbered tab.
Note: In Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Word 2010, click Multilevel List on the Home tab.

I have "Office", but don't know which - nor have I been able to find out !
DIre, or what ????
Are you running Office for Windows or are you running Office on some other operating system? In Windows, you can find out the version information via File > Account (if you have a more recent version with the ribbon).
Are you trying to create a document with chapters, appendixes and captions? In that case, see https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numberingappendixes.html.
- RobinClayBrass ContributorThank you ! I found something -
---------------------------------------
Microsoft's Word for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2308 Build 16.0.16731.20182) 32-bit |
---------------------------------------
but it doesn't say whether it's Word 2007 or Word 2010
I don't seem to have a "Format" Tab; I have "Format text" and "Format paragraph!, with icons, and rummidging around I did find the "Multilevel List", and have managed to create a List of Contents !
Thanks again for your help.RobinClay That is the latest subscription version of Office.
RobinClay To find out what version of Office you have, go to File>Account.
By default, a Table of Contents will include items that are formatted with the Heading 1, Heading 2 and Heading 3 styles. If you only want the chapters to appear in the Table of Contents, simply do not use the Heading 2 and Heading 3 styles.
If you want the chapters to be numbered, see the article "How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word document" on the following page of the Late Shauna Kelly's website:

- RobinClayBrass ContributorThank you for explaining it all so lucidly !
And for the Link.
All sorted now, with the help of you both !
I'm sorry MicroSoft jid it all so well that I had to call on you for help !
