Captions in Word

I am trying to place a caption under Tables and Figures that include chapter numbers as follows: Figure 1.1, Figure 1.2, Figure 2.1. I follow all instructions but when I enter the caption it returns ...

    Somehow I had changed the chapter number header back to CHAPNUM instead of Header 1. I placed Header 1 back in my styles, based it on CHAPNUM so I have the correct formatting. I then reset the chapter number heading to Header 1 and picked the correct numbering scheme. After that, everything worked. Thanks again for all your patience. I really learned a lot.
