Can't apply font from table style to table

I've set up a table styles, but when I apply it to a table, the font characteristics (for example, white color in the header row) aren't applied.
This seems to be because the rows in the table have the Normal paragraph style applied to them.

How to I remove paragraph styles from a table, so that the text styles used are those defined in the table style?

  • If this is Word for Windows, ensure that the font settings of the document defaults matches the corresponding settings in the Normal style. This will ensure that Word honors the font settings in the table style (and also honors the font settings in any paragraph styles that have been applied to text in the table cells).

  • Try on below:

    • Select the Table: Click anywhere in the table to select it.
    • Select All Text: Press Ctrl + A to select all the text within the table.
    • Clear All Formatting: Go to the "Home" tab, click on the "Clear All" button in the "Paragraph" group (it looks like an eraser). This will remove all paragraph styles from the selected text.
    • Apply Table Style: Now, apply your desired table style. The text should now use the styles defined in the table style instead of the Normal paragraph style.

Try using Automatic Color rather than white and see what happens. I am assuming that there is colored shading applied to that row. The purpose of Automatic is to change between dark and light depending on the background.

Table styles seem to take their formatting from the default style used in the document.

My starting style in new documents is Body Text and the table styles take off from there.

I do not have an answer to your direct question, as you probably figured out.

You could also create custom paragraph styles and apply them within a table.

For more depth, look into Theme Colors under the Design tab.

    1. [Quick] Style Sets and Word Themes in Microsoft Word
    2. Shading (ie background colour) in table styles
