Can I remove Modern Comments and revert back?
- Feb 22, 2022
Send feedback to Microsoft to let them know what you think about the so-called modern comments; for instructions, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/how-do-i-give-feedback-on-microsoft-office-2b102d44-b43f-4dd2-9ff4-23cf144cfb11.
Microsoft's rationale about "posting" is mentioned in the support article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/using-modern-comments-in-word-edc6ae71-0a2d-49fe-8faa-986f1e48136a (which you may have seen already).
Finally, you should see an option to temporarily revert to the previous, more user-friendly interface at File > Options > General. Clear the check box next to "Enable modern comments."
chiara369I am so grateful for this entire thread. I am happy to know there are so many like myself who completely hate this "modern comments" update to Word. I don't like the idea of never updating the thing again, as some are setting their devices to prevent. There may be some things that need to be fixed. (I had that weird problem where I'd save a document under a new name but then it didn't... that's another story.) But given that so many people have complained about this new comments thing, maybe we can make "modern comments" this year's New Coke.
I too am an educator who uses the comments feature much the way you and others have described. I also often save these documents as PDF files in case students have different version of Word (like Word for Mac) and don't always see the edits and corrections I've made. In this "modern comments" age, I actually see that some of my comments are MISSING in the pdf I've saved. (I figured a workaround by using "print to pdf," but why should we need a workaround?)
I suppose that yes documents are evolving, but there are still plenty of us who work in isolation on documents in order to give feedback.
The other workaround -- where you go to File=>Options=>General and unclick the "enable modern comments" box seems to be having the desired effect... But again, why do we need these workarounds??
Again, thanks all for "getting me"! 🙂
