Oct 09, 2023Feedback / FR: Windows Server vNext Notepad, Terminal, winget, Disk Management etc.
Dear Windows Server Team,
I am excited that Windows Terminal and the latest Notepad will both be part of the new Windows Server experience. Also, many UX improvements from Windows 11 are coming to this version, e.g. the new Disk Management in Settings app.
few things to note:
- Winget: please try to include Winget into WS vNext
- Notepad: if you open Notepad, it will notify you that there is a new notepad available. Clicking on that notification, it will open the file in the new Notepad app right away. That's great!
Feature Request: What should be looked into, this question comes up every single time one launches Notepad, which doesn't help the UX.
Please save the choice per user, e.g. via HKCU Registry or better, don't refrain to make it the default option, and offer the option to switch back to the old one. I believe the fewest will do so because the new Notepad is so much better with auto-save, tabs, line feeds, better default fonts etc.
- Windows Terminal: it is great to see it will replace the cmd by default and comes with the better font, too.
- Feature Request: Disk Management: since the new Disk Management appear to be feature complete, I would love to see that Win+X Disk Management will head to the new Disk Management instead of the old one
- Same goes with the Storage Spaces Management, but this is missing some features still. Deleting a Storage Spaces is not possible, upgrading one is not possible either. Otherwise it looks solid
- I would like to renew my wish on winget on Windows Server vNext.
The installation challenges are finally solved in vNext. The VCredist appx are separately available then everyone can install winget
It is the same with Microsoft Terminal (included inbox), and their "predeployment package" that works fine.
It is on the roadmap for longer, please make this wish come true. GPO settings are feasible for management, PowerShell support on the way, can be updated via Update Catalog just like you do for Microsoft Terminal, don't you?

I have also noticed that the new Outlook App appears on the start screen of Windows Server vNext.
Not sure if this is helpful for the most. Maybe it is better to exclude the Windows Server SKU from this offer.
