Windows 11 Taskbar enhancements for multi-desktop
Hi,
I'm interested in a couple of enhancements to better support Windows Desktops (task view). I use this feature to run at least 4 different desktops on my Windows PC. I have multiple desktops for different contexts to separate activities - leisure, hobby, work, and more.
In using Windows this way, I have 2 enhancements to suggest.
The first is a bugfix where if you have an auto-hide taskbar, then when switching desktop you will find the desktop name label that appears at the bottom of the screen will cover the centre of your taskbar if it appears while this label is in view. The label position itself is x-distance from the top of the taskbar, which means when the taskbar is hidden it starts from the 0px position on the y-axis and doesn't move when the taskbar comes into view (covering the taskbar). This is a minor nuisance.
The second is a feature request. It would be amazing if we had a unique set of pinned icons (taskbar buttons) per desktop taskbar or select which desktops a particular button does or doesn't appear on. The former approach would necessitate pinning each shortcut for each desktop you want it to appear on, and the latter would mean setting which desktops it should not appear on. I think I would prefer the latter approach, but I suspect the former approach would work best with the existing taskbar behaviour settings and therefore easier to maintain/implement. Essentially, I want to contextualise the pinned buttons per desktop because each desktop is a different context - so it makes sense to match the taskbar buttons to the desktop.
Maybe this should be a powertoys feature but I feel it is not just for power users to enjoy.

Microsoft could improve the taskbar's behavior so that when switching desktops, the desktop name label appears above the taskbar or does not cover the taskbar area.

I think they should offset the label y-position by the taskbar height (whether visible or not). This number could compute at runtime or whenever there is any change to the visual properties of the taskbar (like display changes, property changes) for the primary taskbar (to handle multi monitor situations).
A bit of work for something relatively minor but the polish is worth it.
