Transfer files from mac to windows via usb cable or wifi network?
Just switched from an old MacBook Pro to a new Windows 11 laptop and now stuck on the file transfer part. There's nearly 100GB of stuff (videos, photos, project folders), and no clue what is the least painful way. USB cable sounds fast, but macOS to Windows never plays nice. Wi-Fi transfer sounds easy, but not sure about speed or reliability.
Anyone here done this recently? Looking for something stable and not super complicated to let me easily and quickly transfer files from mac to windows via USB cable or WiFi network. Built-in tools, apps, SMB sharing, AirDrop alternatives, whatever works in real life. Appreciate any tips!

One method involves using cloud storage to transfer files from Mac to Windows. This approach is suitable for smaller batches of data and is straightforward to operate. For modest data volumes, you can utilise your existing cloud services. I frequently employ this method for transfers, though it is only practical for very small data sets.
Upload files from your Mac to services such as OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox.
On your Windows computer, either download these files directly from the website or, better still, install the synchronisation client. This ensures the files automatically appear in your folders.
Drawbacks: This method relies on network bandwidth, making large file transfers time-consuming. It is also constrained by cloud storage capacity limits and carries risks regarding data privacy and security on third-party servers.
Points to note: Ensure the total file size does not exceed available cloud storage capacity beforehand. Maintain a stable internet connection. Prioritise installing official clients. Convert Mac-specific files to universal formats. Promptly clear cloud files after transfer to free up space.

Transferring files between Mac and Windows over Wi-Fi often feels frustratingly slow—what should be a quick exchange becomes a test of patience as progress bars crawl. The typical default speeds, rarely exceeding 30-50 MB/s even on modern networks, squander the potential of your hardware and leave you wondering if cables are the only solution. But achieving near-wired speeds wirelessly is entirely possible with the right configuration.
The secret lies not in buying faster routers alone, but in a systematic approach that optimizes every layer of the transfer chain: from your network's physical configuration and protocol selection to operating system tweaks and strategic file preparation.
Best Tips to transfer files from mac to windows via WiFi network
1. Optimize Your Network Foundation
Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi Band: Ensure both devices connect to the 5 GHz network (less interference, higher speed than 2.4 GHz.)
Wi-Fi 6/6E: If hardware supports it, Wi-Fi 6 provides significant speed improvements.
Proximity: Place both computers close to the router, ideally in the same room.
Minimize Interference: Turn off unnecessary Wi-Fi devices, avoid microwave usage during transfer.
2. Configure SMB for Maximum Performance (Mac Side)
# Terminal commands to optimize SMB on Mac: sudo nano /etc/nsmb.conf # Add these lines: [default] signing_required=no streams=yes protocol_vers_map=7 # Save (Ctrl+O, Enter, Ctrl+X)3. Windows Configuration for Speed
Disable Remote Differential Compression:
- Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on/off
- Uncheck "Remote Differential Compression"
Network Discovery Settings: Ensure network profile is set to "Private" not "Public."
Turn on network discovery and file/printer sharing.
Power Settings: Set Wi-Fi/Ethernet adapter to "Maximum Performance" in power options.
By following the trick above, you can enjoy the maximum speed for transferring files from macOS to Windows via wifi network.

Your concerns are valid. While using a USB cable seems quick, the experience of transferring files from macOS to Windows has never been smooth. Using a network connection offers stability but is less reliable. Another method for transfer files from mac to windows when not on the same network is to use an external hard drive or USB flash drive.
Key step: Formatting the storage device
By default, Macs can only read NTFS-formatted disks from Windows systems; they cannot write to them. Therefore, the device must be formatted to a dual-system compatible format:
Connect the external hard drive/USB stick to your Mac and open Disk Utility.
Select the storage device on the left, then click the “Erase” option at the top.
Choose ExFAT as the format.
Click Erase.
File Transfer Steps
- Drag and drop the files you wish to transfer directly onto the formatted external storage device.
Right-click the device icon on your Mac desktop and select ‘Eject’.
Connect the external storage device to your Windows computer, open its folder, and drag files to local paths such as the Windows desktop or Documents folder.
(⚠️ Note: This operation will erase all data on the device. Please back up your files beforehand).

During the initial setup of Windows 11, you can transfer files directly from your Mac using Microsoft's Windows Easy Transfer successor, the PC to PC transfer feature, which leverages your local network to migrate documents, pictures, music, and other personal data. This method is built into the Windows 11 Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) and provides a guided, official pathway for transferring files from Mac to Windows PC during Windows 11 setup process. This is a brand new feature in Windows 11 and can't be found on old Windows versions like Windows 10.
Start Windows 11 Setup: Begin installing or setting up Windows 11 on your target PC. Proceed until you reach the "Let's connect you to a network" screen.
Connect Both Computers: Ensure both your Mac and the new Windows PC are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Choose Transfer Option: When prompted with "How would you like to set up?", select "Set up for personal use" and continue. Later, at the "Transfer files and apps" screen, choose "From another PC" (or a similar transfer option).
Use the "Phone Link" Method: Since direct Mac-to-Windows transfer isn't native, the setup will often guide you to use the Phone Link app or prompt you to visit www.microsoft.com/transfer on your Mac.
Follow Web Instructions: On your Mac's browser, the website will provide a secure transfer code and instruct you to select the files and folders you wish to move to your new Windows 11 PC over the local network.
This trick is the best for Windows 11 users who want to transfer files from macOS to Windows 11 PC. But it's primarily network-based and may require using a web interface from your Mac rather than a direct cable connection. It's best for migrating personal folders during initial setup but has limitations for large-scale data transfers or ongoing file sharing needs. For greater control, speed, or repeated transfers, using an external exFAT drive or setting up a proper SMB network share remains more effective.

When direct computer-to-computer transfer seems complex, using an external USB drive acts as a simple, reliable courier between macOS and Windows. This method doesn't require network configurations, special software, or worrying about IP addresses. Instead, you format a portable drive—whether it's a USB flash drive, external SSD, or hard drive to a file system that both operating systems can natively read and write.
This approach is particularly favored for its universality and offline capability if you are looking for a way to transfer files from macOS to Windows 11/10 via USB cable. It works regardless of network availability, firewall settings, or operating system versions. For large transfers—like video projects, extensive photo libraries, or full application backups. It often proves faster than wireless methods. The key to success lies in formatting the drive as exFAT, a modern file system designed specifically for flash storage and broad compatibility, unlike macOS's APFS or Windows' NTFS, which have limited cross-platform support without additional drivers. Usually, USB cable is faster than WiFi network for file transfer from Mac to Windows PC.
Pros:
- Universal Compatibility: Works with any Mac and Windows PC made in the last 15+ years, with no software to install.
- Offline & Secure: No network or internet required. The transfer stays physically contained, which can be more secure for sensitive data.
- Excellent for Large Files/Volumes: Ideal for transferring terabytes of data, high-resolution videos, or disk images where network speed would be a bottleneck.
- Creates a Built-in Backup: The files exist in three places (Mac, drive, PC) during transfer, offering accidental deletion protection.
- Simple and Predictable: The process (copy-paste) is familiar to all users and eliminates network discovery or authentication issues.
Cons:
- Requires a Third Device: You must have a compatible external drive, which is an additional piece of hardware to own and manage.
- Two-Step Process: Files must be copied twice, which doubles the manual effort and total transfer time.
- Physical Handling: Involves plugging and unplugging drives, with associated risks of wear on ports, losing the drive, or accidental disconnection.
- Speed Limited by Drive: Transfer rates are capped by the drive's technology (e.g., USB 2.0, 3.0, SSD vs. HDD).
