Is there a simple way to extract MP3 from YouTube on Mac
I’m on a Mac right now and trying to figure out how to extract MP3 from YouTube video on Mac without installing sketchy software. I only need to save a few music tracks or background audio for offline listening — nothing complicated.
On Windows, I usually use yt-dllp and it works great for me: clean, reliable, and good audio quality. The problem is, on Mac I’m not as comfortable with command-line stuff, so I’m hoping there’s an easier option.
I’ve already tried some online converters, but most of them are full of ads, painfully slow, or the MP3 quality is just bad.
So what do you actually use in real life on macOS?
Is there a simple and safe way to extract mp3 from YouTube video on Mac that still works well in 2026?
Would really appreciate some real-world recommendations 🙏

There is no simple and fully legitimate way to extract MP3s directly from YouTube videos. Downloading or converting YouTube content usually violates their terms unless the creator provides a download option. On macOS, the safe options are using official offline features or downloading audio only when the creator allows it. If you just need offline listening, subscription-based offline playback is the supported route. Anything that claims to extract MP3s directly may stop working or cause other issues.

You can use a dedicated app for doing that.

YouTube MultiDownloader can help you extract MP3 from YouTube on Mac. It's a convenient choice if you want to avoid installing software on your Mac. Here's how it generally works and what to expect:
What is Youtubemultidownloader?
Overview: It’s typically a small, lightweight tool or script, sometimes shared within developer communities or niche forums, designed specifically for downloading videos and converting them to audio formats like MP3.
Approach: Instead of using popular GUIs, it often relies on command-line operations, API calls, or minimal interface scripts, making it less obvious or known to the general user.
How to extract MP3 from YouTube on Mac:
1. You input the URL of the video.
2. The tool fetches the video data using YouTube’s API or scraping techniques.
3. It then extracts the audio stream directly.
4. The audio is converted or saved as an MP3 file on your Mac.

addonccrop + CRX Emulator. And this can be used for extracting mp3 from youtube videos on macOS.
These tools are often used to install YouTube downloader extensions that have been banned or removed from the Chrome Web Store.
1. Find a video downloader extension from chrome web.
2. Use Addonccrop or a CRX downloader site to get the CRX file.
3. Install it manually in Chrome via Developer Mode.
How to ow to Install a CRX File on Chrome (Mac)
1. Download the CRX file from Addonccrop or similar site
2. Open Chrome and go to: chrome://extensions/
3. Enable Developer mode (toggle in top-right)
4. Drag the CRX file onto the extensions page
5. Click "Add extension" when promptedPractical Issues
Breaking Changes: YouTube frequently changes its code, causing downloader extensions to stop working
Quality Limitations: Browser extensions typically offer lower audio quality than desktop apps
Browser Performance: Extensions can slow down your browser and consume significant memory
While Addonccrop + CRX Emulator can be used to install YouTube downloader extensions on Chrome for Mac, this approach carries significant security risks, reliability issues, and quality limitations. For extracting MP3 from YouTube on macOS, native applications or command-line tools are generally safer, more reliable, and produce better results without compromising your browser's security or performance.
If you absolutely must use a browser extension to extract mp3 from youtube video on macos, stick to well-known ones still available on the Chrome Web Store and understand they may stop working at any time due to YouTube's ongoing efforts to block such tools.

Extracting MP3 from YouTube on Mac is not an easy task. You can try other different methods to achieve your goal. As QuickTime Player is primarily designed for recording, playing, and editing video and audio files, use QuickTime Player to record audio from YouTube on your Mac, follow these step-by-step instructions:
Step 1: Prepare Your Mac
Make sure your speakers are turned on and volume is up.
Open the YouTube video you want to record.Step 2: Open QuickTime Player
Launch QuickTime Player from your Applications folder or Spotlight.Step 3: Start a New Audio Recording
In QuickTime, go to File > New Audio Recording.
The recording window will appear.Step 4: Select Input Device
Click the small arrow next to the record button.
Choose your microphone (e.g., Internal Microphone or an external mic if you have one).Although this is not the conventional way to extract MP3 from YouTube on Mac, it can help you enjoy music freely on your Mac.
Important: To record system audio (sound coming from your Mac), you need to add a virtual audio device like BlackHole or Loopback because QuickTime only records from input devices, not system audio.

Permute is my favorite app for extracting mp3 from youtube on mac.
It is a versatile and elegantly designed media conversion app for macOS that excels at batch processing and format transformation, with the added capability of downloading audio from YouTube when paired with the open-source tool youtube---dl.
Permute requires youtube---dl to fetch YouTube content. The app can usually install it automatically. If not, you can manually install it via Terminal with:
brew install youtube---dlOpen Permute. At the top, you'll see format tabs (Video, Audio, etc.). Click the "Audio" tab.
In the bottom-left of the window, click the gear icon (Settings). Go to the General tab and ensure "Show download from YouTube option" is checked.
Back in the main window, confirm MP3 is selected as the output format in the Audio tab. You can adjust quality (bitrate) by clicking the small gear next to the MP3 icon.
Click the "Download from YouTube" button that now appears in the bottom-left (a downward arrow icon).
Paste your YouTube URL into the field and click "Download". Permute will fetch the video and automatically add it to the conversion queue.
The file will appear in the main queue with a visual preview. Click the "Convert" button (bottom-right) to extract mp3 from youtube on mac.
Cons of Using Permute for This Task
- Primarily a converter, not a dedicated downloader for mac.
- Higher cost for a Single use case
- No advanced download management

Using a browser extension is a convenient way to extract MP3 from YouTube on Mac. These extensions typically integrate directly into your web browser, allowing you to download audio or video content with just a few clicks. To do this, you would install a reputable YouTube downloader extension—available for browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
Once installed, you can navigate to the video you want to convert. The extension usually provides a download button or menu option on the video page. When you click it, you’ll often see options to select the format and quality, including extract MP3 from YouTube on Mac. After choosing MP3, the extension processes the video and saves the audio file directly to your Mac.
Keep in mind, though, that many of these extensions may violate YouTube’s terms of service, and using them could pose security risks if they are not from trusted sources. Always ensure you download extensions from reputable developers, and consider the legal implications of downloading copyrighted content.
Pros:
Easy to use directly within your browser.
No need to install separate software.
Typically quick for one-off downloads. - ScarlettDavisBronze Contributor
Downie is a premium, user-friendly macOS application specifically designed for downloading videos and audio from thousands of websites, with excellent optimization for YouTube. I tried quite a few YouTube audio extractors on macOS before, both online tools and desktop apps. Sometimes it really can't recognize the songs, which frustrates me.
Eventually, I stopped trying to "extract" audio and switched to recording the audio instead.
Unlike Windows, macOS blocks direct system audio capture at the OS level, which is why many recorders seem broken at first, they simply can’t hear internal audio without extra setup.
After testing different approaches, I found there are really two practical ways to make this work.
One is using QuickTime Player with a virtual audio driver like BlackHole. Once it’s set up correctly, the audio quality is solid and reliable. The downside is the initial configuration.
The other approach is to use a dedicated audio recorder like Recexperts, which is designed to handle macOS’s audio restrictions more gracefully. The setup is much simpler and more stable in day-to-day use. JUST press the REC button.
Hope it's helpful.
